  1. Hi, im a shadow ranger for the forestry commission and work with a guy every now and then whos in a similar situation to you, hes coming up to retiring form the army having done 26 years and is currently studying at Askham Bryan in York think hes doing the Countryside management course (dont know which qual though) and then comes out with the Rangers as and when he can. Im pretty sure he wants to become a wildlife ranger. Unfortunately your felling and climbing quals will be useless in any forestry commission position as they sub anything like that out, most you will ever get your hands on is a bow saw and thats after various H&S and First Aid courses.

  2. Hi, there was a proposal by the government to sell off large blocks of woodland but this was met with quite fierce opposition and the government backed off. My view of it is they were just dipping their toe in the water to see what kind of reaction they got, i think they will refocus on other ways in which to sell off large blocks of forests to boost the governments coffers. It would indeed be an ideal world if one could just buy a woodland and live in it and use said woodland to live off, sadly it is only a dream but for the select few, Ben Laws will be only too happy to tell you how he battled for 12 years to get planning permission to build a 'temporary' dwelling in his own woodland. With the recent planning laws being given the green light it may indeed be slightly easier to be able to buy woodland and one day convince the local authority planners that you need to be on site 24/7 to enable a dwelling to be built to protect your income, but if was that easy im sure half of the users of this site would be doing just that.

This was a good article i read which got me thinking Secret forest sell-off 'shopping lists' drawn up by conservation groups | Environment | The Guardian

Please note that this is only my view and views from other users and members are available :laugh1:

  3. I'm surprised by the response, very positive! I'd have told him he was past it, the moneys **** and your body will hate you. Surely there're too many tree surgeons kicking about as it is, we don't need to start encouraging people to get into it do we?!

That is probably the most negative comment ive read on this forum, dont need to start encouraging people into the industry, WTF, this isnt some closed shop, were you not new to the industry once? I think we should be encouraging people to get into the industry, imo bringing new people in will only up the professionalism of the industry as new people are keen and hungry for knowledge, and up to date knowledge at that. Come on encourage the guy, at least hes had the guts to admit he wants a career change and doesnt want to be looking back in 10-20 years time thinking 'if only'.

    Rant over

  4. I do run this course, the problem is we get quite a few enquires at this time of year, then when it comes to planting time people are too busy or want to postpone it until later, we then end up with 1 or 2 people wanting the course at a time.

It's not viable to run the course with that amount of people and expensive for assessments.

If you get a group of 6 candidates I will be more than happy to run it for you and arrange the assessments, at the end of November.

Yeah totally agree, I'll ask about and see if there is anyone else interested. What price do you charge for the course?
