  1. Been thinking of using a swapod for years and trying to use silkys more in the tree now, snapped the attachment on my silky lanyard so have spent the last 2-3 weeks with the scabbard gaffer taped to my leg where a sawpod would go. Seems intuitive to have it there and will deffo be buying a sawpod at the celebration of trees next week. If you want to try you could try the same with gaffer tape at a fraction of the cost of a sawpod.
  2. Hi, relatively new to this site but not new to mountain bikes, I ride a Dialled Bikes Price Albert at the mo for trail centres and bike parks thats a steel hardtail with long travel front forks. Ride a 96' rigid Lava dome to the yard every day and on local off road rides (absoloutely fine for off roading in north herts and cheap to maintain). Merlin Malt and rock lobster is a good choice, loads of bike for your money, used to ride one and have built my girlfriend a malt 1 and she loves it. On one bikes are deffo also worth a look as are diallled imo , make sure you get the sizing right, have seen many people get put off mountain biking from poor fitting bikes how tall are you?, im 5"9" and ride 16 - 17" frames typically, that allows me to lower the saddle for technical/downhill sections. I have adjustable travel on the suspension forks as well and find that a useful feature as you can wind the front end down when climbing to keep the front wheel on the ground. I wouldnt personally recommend a full suss for a first mountain bike, you can develop more skills on a hard tail and it will make you a better rider if you wish to progress, i have ridden full suss in the past but returned to hardtail as i find its less maintenence and more challenging, i also need to avoid any more head injurys due to health so the real hardcore riding is out of the question now!. It would also be worth thinking about what you will be using the bike for, if its for commuteing on the road to work and shops forget about mountain bikes and get a decent hybrid with a good set of panniers and a rack and if you can face it mudguards, me and the girlfreind share one of these, she doesnt drive so uses this for her main transport and its great, faster and more comfortable than an mtb on the road and no sweaty back from carrying everything in your rucksack, this was my bike when i was temporarily unable to drive and i used it to carry all my climbing gear and even 020 sometimes easier than it would be to carry it in bags. Kona do a good range of hybrids. as do trek, marin, spesh and giant. Hybrids are very practical 99% of the time for most cyclists but are not very cool hence the popularity of mtbs i think. Sorry for ramblings but will talk about bikes all night (if im not riding them)
  3. Agree and might need to start a letter writing campaign myself, also think the scrap metal industry is in need of serious reform, where would anyone legitimately get 10 catalytic converters from other than a mechanic obviously but how do you police it. Have a freind who is a legit scrap metal collector, he's been doing it most of his life, is in his 60s now and gets threatened by these scum on an almost weekly basis. Would also agree on the monies laundering, and we're not talking pence here.
  4. Thanks for all the tips and police really don't want to know, waited hours for forensics to come and then started pissing with rain so i phoned and said it wouldnt be worth checking for prints. Copper did phone me back today but sounded like he was still doing his GCSEs did show some interest, think they seem to be cracking down on metal thefts at the mo. Will check out threads for tips on security, going to step security up a lot this time!.
  5. Hi all not posted before but just notifying anyone in Beds/Herts the ****** have been out thieving again this time at our yard we share with other businesses on the A1 southbound near Biggleswade. This time they took alloys of several vehicles just about every catalytic converter off a fleet of vehicles, is going to cost the owner his excess and no claims on all vehicles. His struggling and this could finish him off. They took from us: Nearly new black 1.6 tonne tirfor type winch with 20m 16mm wire rope. (we used to call these "jet" winches and they were silver then). Two batterys from Unimog we are currently trying to sell. Two job old Makita top handled chainsaw (anchor point snapped on second job and now cant send back). MS200t - broken chainbrake where it always breaks at starter cord end of chainsaw also an arrow etched (well, scratched really) onto bar. Also just fitted a new carb a month ago. Husky 350, AL postcode etched into top cover which is slightly different colour than rest of saw, new pot and piston fitted by dealer i brought saw secondhand from dealer 7 months ago. New 15" bar fitted. Quite a distinctive saw. Stihl bg85 blower. New england fly rope in orange rope bag. Brand new yale xtc plus rope, red 30m. Second rope Only used for one job. Site 14v cordless drill. They also went through all boxes, paperwork in the vehicle dare say they know who we are and where we live (lucky were moving this month but still worrying) Also left If anyone is offered this or has details please let me or the police know. We will offer cash for any info relating to the return of equipment and prosecution of thieves. This happened to us last year at another and they cleaned us out completely chipper and everything, insurance paid up eventually but not decided whether to claim for this (500 exess and premium has doubled after last claim). Been wondering whether is all worth it but know that ultimately integrity and professionalism will pay off in the end. Also really wish i marked kit better, think i might spray new tools day glow pink and have them etched. If anybody has a good secondhand small ground saw for sale, pref husky 346xp or a secondhand tirfor type winch please post or p/m me. All the best, happy new year and sorry for negative thread. On a positive note spent the evening kit was stolen building myself a new very nice mountain bike so was at least doing something productive.
