  1. Hiya

Us axe and knife carvers love fresh felled birch and fruit woods, as do pole lathe turners.

The problem is getting a steady supply as once the wood is a few months old it is to dry to carve.

For us carvers some crooks are very welcome....

  2. Hi all

I have run out of carving wood but I am hoping that yesterdays wind means that there is some very green birch about? Does anyone have any?

I am in Bicknacre, near Danbury, near Chelmsford.

I carve this sort of thing, with axe and knife.

Hi Baggy hows the Nic Westermann blade holding up and do you use his spoon knifes ?

    I have a load of Nics blades;

A drawknife, 30mm clip point, Twca Cam, a left and right handed spoon knives, and a 70mm carver. They are all a joy to use, hold their edge well and all very, very sharp.

On my wants list is Nics axe and adze, a roughing out spoon blade, a 100mm carver and now he is making gouges.....

Much of what Nic makes is not on his website yet.

When Nics blades arrive they are super sharp and I have started using his sharpening material as it is the best way to sharpen the blades. Although they stay sharp with just stropping for ages.

  4. If yo look at the first photo at the top there is a small bandsaw on the very left of the pic, that is available to a reasonable offer.

It's an sip with either 10 or 12 inch bandwheels

OK, I have no idea of value so I will get some advice from a buddy that does, then get back to you.

  5. Save for a big one, I'd say 14" min. A small one will annoy you, I picked up a reasonable Clarke 16" on ebay for 105. Not the best but more than adequate. Thinking bout chopping it in for a startrite though if anyone knows of one going cheapish.

That makes sense, but initially I just want to cut up small offcuts from my carving into holders for tealights, jewellery etc.

So a small bandaw would work for that

  6. Hiya

What size bandsaw are you after??? I have a couple of others i dont use in another shed

It would have to be a small one as my budget is in pennies, more than pennies will have to be wrestled out of my wife who has just realised how little I earned last year :-(

  7. Ditto, better than my damp and cluttered man shed any day:001_rolleyes: and so much more space.

Especially after my boss told me yesterday that his other half's father has got a whole workshop full of woodworking tools and equipment for sale at nominal prices :001_tongue:.

    Would that include a bandsaw?
