  1. Hi Arbs,

I am going to see a client who is asking for a Soil Sample,

I keep asking him, what type of sample? and he says that it is for a mortgage.

It sounds to me like he is after a "Shrinkable Clay" percentage sample...

    Have you done it before?

are there specifications on how to make this?

i am taking 350grs of a mix of samples , mixing it in a see through bag and sending it to the lab once i know a bit more detailed what exactly this sample is about?

    Any suggestions?

    thanks

If it's for a mortgage I suspect they'll want to know soil types beneath foundation level. They want to see how plastic the soil is (normally anything over 11% is shrinkable)

Been a while since I did Sub's work but testing soil samples can vary a lot every few feet.

We used to use a company called CET - they used to sink boare holes all round the property and test is at various depth until they got beneath the foundation level

  2. The high temps over the past two days have made the glue holding my rooflining up to melt and leave my head holding it up!!!!

I used that carpet glue before, spray stuff, and it was a cracking job.

Unsure what to use now. Maybe Copydex or something.

Same happened to me last summer after using carpet glue to stick camping mats to my roof!!

Haven't tried it yet but was gonna give this stuff a try:

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

Apparantly its used a lot on VW campers?

I've seen over 50oC in my 110 after being left in the sun all day so hopefully 70 oC would be ok!

  3. Im after some points on tipping trailers, i will be buying new and until recently i have been set on the atlas tipper, howerver i have read that the trailer frame is made in china?? and this has got me thinking of other makes, does anyone know if they galvanise the atlas in UK or is that done in china too and if so what is the quality of galvanising.

I currently have an Ifor 2009 flatbed which i am impressed with bar a few rivets coming loose but I see Ifor are bringing out a 2012 new tipper which has a higher payload than the atlas.

I am quite keen to stay with Ifor because dealers are near me and parts are pletifull but have heard that there quality control has slipped compared to their older models.

Any thoughts on either models? If someone can convince me of either model would be good as i keep changing my mind!

    thanks, matt

    Hi mate,

We just bought a Atlas tipper trailer and are quite impressed so far.

We were under the same impression but it turns out they are now made by Graham Edwards Trailer based in York

Livestock Trailers | Plant Trailer | Tipper Trailers | Flatbed Trailer | General Purpose Trailers

Apparantly our trailer was the first one to be completely built in the UK?

Might be worth giving them a call for more info.

We only used it a few time but no problems so far. It tows well and seems to be well built.

  4. ve been planting eucalyptus on a estate I work for, its a bit of a trail run to see what they grow like. We've been using a method called mounding to plant them on where a excavator digs little mounds all over the place and then trees are planted on the mounds its meant to help with frost and create a weed free enviroment for them to grow, hopefully something good will come from them

Hi Stu, don't suppose thats on a site over by Hook Common is it? Was looking at a fencing job there recently and there was some randon Euc plantings in amongst pine plantation?

  5. I fitted a GKN unit to my old 200Tdi 90 and it was brilliant especially for towing as it could be used as a splitter in 3 and 4 and then lower the rev's in 5th once on the motorway. I found it made motorway work much more relaxing.

Got a Td5 110 and am gutted I had to sell my 200Tdi with the unit still attached. The Td5 is a good engine but definately needs long legs above 60mph.

GKN dont make the overdrives anymore but they do pop up time to time on flebay and I think Devon4x4 stock parts for them still.

When money allows I will be getting a Roverdrive unit (expensive mind £1500). Unlike the GKN unit it has no electrics involve which I like the sound of and I think it runs straight off the gearbox oil rather than its own supply.

I don't think you'll ever make your money back on the unit in diesel costs (although if it hits £2 per litre....!) but it will make motorway driving much nicer and give you more flexibility when towing.
