  1. I would consider you right. I found it in poor taste when 'Little Britain' used the same phrase. The story explained that Farage found it the same and pulled her up, but the people who were best placed to decide did not want her expelled, nor have they left the party. I also don't see where calling somebody a racist term is part of UKIP policy. By your system, the majority of the parties should be on the banned list for the actions of individual members.

Wasn't even aware that phrase was used in a major comedy series, that surprises me.

But yeah, she has been suspended for some expenses swindle now.

It's not part of their policy to be inherently racist, it just so happens that I can't put my trust in people with that. Many of their other policies, predominantly the one on immigration I can't get behind though.

I see what you're saying about the actions of individual members, things like financial wrong doings like the expenses scandals are bad, but I don't know of any other party as infamous for its members racist, homophobic, misogynistic views.

  2. Before everyone gets too excited about so-called racism: some here should try living in a place where within a ten year period it has become possible to walk through the town centre WITHOUT hearing English spoken.

    Just saying.

I've lived in Coventry, Leicester and South East London and I used to quite like listening to, meeting and hearing people from different backgrounds from my own. Not bothered what language people are speaking as I walk through a town centre?!

  3.

Aye this is decent. I got Labour which is what I assumed.

Got a higher % with UKIP rather than the Conservatives which shocked me, but apparently to do with transport (probably based on disagreeing with HS2).

I don't think a tory vote is what it used to be in reference to the "nasty party" comment. I do think a lot of the seemingly economic upturn is a bit of blag though...

  4. I'm saying you seem to be getting a bit over excited with the comments you are making. I'd still like to know your source for the Nazi remark. All I have said is if you don't vote for who you believe in then you should be ashamed of yourself. With regards to UKIP, if you see my comment further back, I am not a UKIP supporter. However, the racism card is a cheap and easy one to play as it is such a blurred line between what is racist and what is merely unpalatable to some people's views. Where actual racism or similar unacceptable views or behaviour have reared their heads within UKIP, it seems to me that Farage has been quicker to expel offenders than some of the other parties. What I do believe is that people should vote for any legitimate party that they feel represents them. That's democracy as I understand it. To turn your own argument around, do you think somebody shouldn't vote for a party if you disagree with their policies? The idea of murderers and paedophiles is just taking the degree of the argument to the ridiculous.

I rarely get excited these days!

There was no source for the Nazi remark, just a bit of sarcasm likening a vote for UKIP to bring about dramatic change in our country to something else that happened in the past :001_smile:

I don't think there have been any blurred lines between what is / what isn't racist in the majority of things that have came out about UKIP mps (the ones we've heard about anyway).

I will agree that Mr Farage has been quick to address these things and although he does seem to harbour some slightly predjudiced views, I don't think he is the bad apple that someone like Nick Griffin is/was.

You're right on democracy but I just don't think people should be allowed to vote for parties containing people with racist views. And I know that wouldn't create a democratic society but if voting murderers in to positions of authority seems ridiculous, what about racists?!

  5. Past your bedtime, I think. I'm not sure which party you think is made up of paedophiles or why I support them. Please do enlighten me.

    Bedtime? I don't follow?

I don't know who you support or think a party is made up of paedophiles.

I am trying to say that if you think it's okay to vote for a party made up of racists(Ukip), would it also be okay to vote for a party made up of say, murderers?

  6. Interesting point, introduce Lynx to control deer numbers and then reduce stalking to increase deer numbers for the Lynx...

I would be curious to hear from someone who stalks Thetford forest, would they view the roe numbers as out of control or too few? I often hear conflicting reports about the deer numbers where I live.

I'm a little sceptical of 'facts' posted from the charity that wants to introduce them, slightly one sided. Assuming they are correct it does not tell me what deer Lynx will attack, i.e. young, old, or a range. That would be useful to know.

I look forward to the time wolverines are introduced to control the lynx.

And bears to control the humans

  7. When I did my Arb level 3 in the Midlands I got a grant from the Studley Trust, which really helped me and I used some of it to pick up my tickets.

My initial application was rejected, I think because I was earning money and paying for my own place to live they thought I was doing okay.

Explained in my statement how annoying it was that 17 year old lads who weren't interested in college were claiming EMA that I couldn't get. Sent them timesheets from my carework job to show I was doing 30 hours a week there and going in to college 4-3 days a week. Sent in a few bank statements so they could see my outgoings were all on housing, food, running a car (to get to college) and adult stuff and sent them off all my results so far to show that I was a good student and I think they sent me a cheque for around £600 and a nice letter, which paid a fair amount towards my tickets.

  8. Apparently the IUCN guidelines state that the Lynx shouldn't have human contact before being reintroduced. It's likely they will be taken from the wild in other parts of Europe and relocated to the UK with as little human interaction as possible. (I'm having this narrated to me as I type haha)

  9. I would suggest a bit of research on gun use and ownership in the UK if she wishes to write a balanced article. Many farmers don't own guns for example, many people who shoot will not shoot animals and indeed some are vegetarian. My main gripe is the use of a photo with a shotgun when they would hardly ever be used on deer. Try talking to BASC.

I would also expect Lynx to be protected so not shot, if anything vehicles would be more of a threat.

Back to Thetford forest, I thought Lynx mainly targeted smaller animals; rabbits, hare and birds? I could seem them hunting Muntjac but how would the Lynx fair as Munties have evolved to fight off predators.

The photo was selected by the editor, same as the captions and the title.

Regardless of whether the lynx are protected or not, this doesn't usually prevent anything - e.g. raptors getting killed.

She does agree on the vehicle thing because its sometimes a problem with reintroduction, but this usually only accounts for 10%. Unlikely with a lynx who prefer secluded woodland. If you look at the reintroduction of the lynx in France, all of them were killed intentionally in a failed reintroduction project.

  10. I think some are focussing on the wrong points here. Its irrelevent whether ALL farmers own guns or that non farmers can own guns. The point is if the farmers aren't the ones pulling the trigger, they are the ones who decides who shoots what on their land. And if they're not behind this re-introduction it will fail. But it appears no one is asking landowners their views

Aye, I think this is more what she is getting at. The fact that the project only has one social scientist on the team and loads of biologists is her main concern.

  11. Thanks for the replies / messages, very much appreciated. Sounds like if I'm willing to do a range of stuff I should manage to pick up some work, likely to be subbying, but not too likely to be domestic climbing work. I could easily cope for a bit on a few days a week anyway :)

  12. I moved up there when I was 17 to go to the forestry college! Loved it one of the most beautiful parts of the world, and the houses are pretty cheap in comparison! I live in Bedfordshire now (not so cheap) and wish I could go back but the Bird is the breadwinner and her career is down this way. I done a bit of forestry in Scandinavia, now in lead climber for a council!

Yeah it looks well nice from pictures. Looked at rental prices and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than Canterbury where we are now.

I'll be in the same position if the lass gets the job, she'll be earning all the money!

If she gets it I'll just call around all the local tree related firms and ask if they have anything for me to do at all. I think my lack of plant / machinery experience is a bit of a drawback for getting into forestry up there. I've used skid steers and driven unimogs but it looks like they use a lot more kit than that. I'm sure I'll find something though!

  13. I used to live in that neck of the woods! I think the majority of the work going is for the forestry commission and Scottish woodland! Their is a lot of piece work planting and spraying. As for actually tree surgery it's quite a small population (100,000 max) and not massively built up. The Scottish school of forestry is based there and they might be able to give you a better idea of what the work prospects are like in the area. Good luck.

Thanks Macca, I'll send the forestry school an email. How did you find living there and where you at now?
