Probably showing my ignorance of all things metal, but can the old silky blades not be recycled into something useful/artistic?? seems a terrible waste of what is presumably some high grade metal.
-
I will Martin, not because I'm bored but because I'm frustrated by my lack of understanding of the dark art of sparkying! Cheers!!
ditto - finding electrickery a bit confusing too
Thanks for the links and info gents

not being in the tree game, but having read quite a few posts on here, would have thought the arb industry would be a little kinder to the poor Leylandii as it does seem to be a good banker for quite a few on here
Granted, a slightly double edged sword judging from some of the comments and pictures
Apart from that, did read somewhere a few years ago - maybe on here - that there were some serious studies being done on them with regard to timber production. If memory serves it was mainly New Zealand based with interest from the UK - possibly.

I use a barco forestry axe. About 60cm handle and a 1.2kg head. The handle is broken at the moment after hitting some hi lifts far too hard. I carry it in a hammer holder on my logging belt.
funny that, my bahco with a similar size handle broke too, with very little use - maybe a dodgy batch.

looking good everybody - almost 4 grand in less than 2 weeks.
Hopefully a bunch of people waiting till after xmas/newyear which would push things on even more.

Not me, or a jumper, but christmassy all the same.
might be just me but the mad staring blue eyes and bared teeth took some of the christmas effect away

bloody hell Matt. Did you have more rain yesterday?
Reminds me why I have always liked living up a hill!!
-
bit grim up north Jon
50 knots most of the day yesterday gusting up to 80 at times
everything battened down in the lee off the NE Scottish coast waiting for this all to pass.
More of the same today probably so should make for a quiet Christmas.

tickets bought
As always, well done to Steve and any helpers and of course the prize donors.
Looks like a fine haul this year to draw the crowds in and have a good go at the 7G target...and beyond!

My Grandson Ozzy is a natural with a Groundsaw...
I suspect you're right Paul, but looks like he might be a natural at something else as well. Did he feel a tad lighter after that picture perhaps

was that not the one from the National Geographic article Mr P?

a free flow of air is key to seasoning wood, so all you need is something to keep the rain off, but let the air flow through.
So if the greenhouse is particularly draughty it might be OK, but suspect that more than likely the greenhouse will probably suffer from condensation and the wood will get a bit mouldy inside the stack.

such a tidy shed Stephen, the trees wanted to jump in and join in the fun

Here's mine. Not the best pic though. I know it's not all that relevant as you're wanting to do a horizontal one, but thought I'd show it anyway as I'm so chuffed with it.

mmm, just about to remortgage with Santander!!
To be honest, I think all banks have their issues - just the luck of the draw if you get caught up in something or not.
As for the person who made the comment earlier in this thread about the Spanish and financials not going together - thats just ingorance.
With London being a major hub in the financial world and having been a significant player in the shenanegans a few years ago, not to mention Libor etc etc, this country can hardly claim to be a shining beacon of financial purity.
People living in glass houses etc.
Sorry about the derail, but people who make stupid, unneccesary comments, just irk me.
Rant over!

As far as I can tell they don't do anything a tapering hinge and a wedge doesn't do better. I have about 100 trees to fell tomorrow (and every day for the next week) and they need to be swung away from a loch, so I'll have a go.
dont forget the camera for a few examples

Pond liner is the way to go. Made for the job. If you use felt make sure it is felt and not roofing membrane as it's not uv stable. Make sure you give the tree plenty of space in the roof and don't pull the felt/rubber tight.
just so there is no confusion, I think Predator was referring to roofing felt which would be a waste of time as it wont cope with compound bends and will harden, crack and leak - needs to be the pond liner type stuff, usually EPDM or butyl. EPDM is also extensively used as single ply roofing membrane, but is an identical product to the EPDM pond liner, except that as a roofing product the manufacturers like to charge a significantly higher price than they can for pond liner

All the best to the chap but the article says it was a tree surgeon which is entirely misleading . Right or wrong fair play to him at 70 for giving it a go
probably just a writer who couldn't be bothered to fact check before publishing!
-
meant to say - yea, the plastic will degrade whereas the pond liner will last a long time
-
1 thing I have found when splitting larger rounds (15+") is not to try and split in the middle, instead go slightly to the side so you'd be taking about a third. Splits much easier :-)
I tend to take smaller pieces off toward the edge which then split into two or three logs and work my way round the ring
-
I have used some pond liner for this sort of situation. It stretches appreciably so made a hole in the middle well smaller than the stack and slipped it over and it makes a nice seal even without glue. The 'skirt' then drops down and can be glued or flashed to the roofing some how depending on how it is constructed.
In your case you will have to wrap it round and as per above tie it with a bungy that together with the pond liner will move with the tree and expand over time.
I guess you might need to undo it and tie it every few years to limit the effect on the tree as it grows.
Hope that is clear enough
