I PREFER USING A MEWP FOR TREE WORK, AS MY MISSUS GETS FUNNY ABOUT ME IN A HARNESS, SO WHEN I CLIMB I HAVE 3 45M ROPES ON ME AND I HAVE LOADS OF ANCHOR POINTS (6 FOR ASCENDING AND 8 FOR WORK POSITIONING) AM I BEING A BIT OTT? my apprentice says they teach you to use two, is this just youth filth? or has the boy got a point?

i would say getting on a diploma course in arb is the best place to start, there are too many people with all the tickets and no theortical tree knowledge to back it up, these course will provide you with ad quals like NPTC certs, but a good place to start is learning tree ident, basice tree science, p's and d's etc. its no good having all the tickets if you dont know what your pruning and why. short term for a job, yes tickets are important, but in personal career development and becoming a knoledgable arborist, its crucial to learn about trees in more depth hope that helps -

PEOPLE LIKE THIS DO MY HEAD IN! LIKE TO SEE HIM DO PROPER TREE WORK FOR AN 8 HOUR DAY, LET ALONE A WEEK! HES GOT ABOUT 5 DECENT STIHL SAWS FROM HIS £2000 A MONTH AT THE SHIPYARD, HOLDS THE SAW WITH HIS RIGHT HAND AT THE FRONT AND GOES IN THE PUB SHOWING OFF WHEN HE PUT THE SAW THROUGH HIS PALM! sorry guys, im just farting about because the chap who started the thread goes to college with me, was just talking nonsense to him. but yeah the 550s at college all run 15s but im sure it would handle an 18 i have a husky 268 with an 18 and hes fine, and as the 550 is much newer and i presume built alot better, it would handle it just fine

mate, do you even no about CODIT, axium of uniform stress, reaction wood, fungal vectors and cellular structures, let alone mycelium and mhychorizal associations

i run mine on a 30 inch bar, ideal for ringing up, people think its too big but i say fine

im not getting paid its the customers tree, whether its in log form or money, i just said id organise it for them seeing as i took the tree down. another sawmill said £100 but he also tried to tell me its cedar and not sequoia

also as its not a diffuse porus wood, its no good for tables out of the rings which is a shame as i considered ringing up and sanding and varnishing, but it will just crack.

yeh your probly right, originally the customer wanted the lot cut and split and taken down to his log shed, which is what weve done with the rest of it, but i told him it would be sh*t firewood, and with the money he gets for that stem he could get some decent seasoned logs............... although the whole reason we dismantled it was because he wanted firewood.

Just wondering how much this butt is worth to anyone, a chap is coming in with his moblie sawmill to plank it and is paying £150, just wondering if im missing a trick and its actually worth loads? Its sequoiadendron gigantium by the way its 6.2 mts long, and 4ft x 4ft diameter at the big end

WEEKEND PRIVATE JOBBY, AWESOME JOB, TREE WAS ON THE DECK BY LUNCH, MY MATE STRIPPED IT OUT AND THEN I KNOCKED THE HEAD OUT AND CHOGGED DOWN, THEN FELLED IT, LARGEST DIAMETER TREE ILL EVER FELL, CONVINCED THE CUSTOMER TO SELL THE BUTT RATHER THAN LOG N SPLIT, THERE WERE RHYZOMORPHS RIGHT IN THE CENTER AT THE FELLING HEIGHT, THE TOP WAS SHOT TO BITS, BUT THE MAIN STEM IS IN GOOD NIK! HAD A COUPLE OF MY MATES SPLITTING THE TIMBER WHILST ME AND MY FREIND DID THE CLIMBING, HAD PLENTY OF SPECTATORS TAKING PHOTOS AND A NICE DAY FOR IT, I LOVE TREE WORK!

GIVEN THE CURRENT STATE OF EMPLOYMENT,after my 10 week course in ipswich, i will have gained cs30,31,38,39 and also some theory. how will i fair in this situation when looking for employment, will i be useful enough to an employer. i am doing the course with a career development loan. i am 20 years old tall and stocky and very hard working. but will not have my own saws or transport untl i am earning. is this enough to be valued by a general tree work employer? any feedback will be bang on!

Hey lads, i'm real keen to get into tree work, im going to ipswich for 10 weeks in january to do a 'tree sugery for craftsmen' course, lots of theory on tree ident and desease and stuff, plus CS30,31,38,39 just wondering wether or not it is worth doing the pruning op ticket and the sectional felling one too? or are these things i will learn on the job. cheerz
