  1. Oh - and 196 links in total.
  2. Times are tough so selling a few bits and came across a decent condition chain but not sure which type it is and what it will fit. Pitch measures 18.64mm (3/4") between 3 pins - so 9.32mm - and gauge measures 1.6mm (0.063") and laid out it's length is 91cm (36") making it 182cm in total. Many moons ago I used an MS660, an MS880 and I think an MS460 so not sure what size bar and saw it would fit? Any help appreciated - and any idea of worth/value?

    Tree id help

I agree about not the form of europea. I'm hoping nothing needs to be done to it, nice shape already and any work would spoil it.

    Tree id help

Yep, I agree with Lime. I'm happy that will do for the moment. Gotta send something in to the local council based on customers photo's and didn't want to look stupid so happy to go with Tilia, whether it's a cordata , platyphyllos or europaea Ill leave till later!
  5. Can anyone give a confident id on this tree? All I've got to go on is 3 photos from the customer so any help appreciated.
  6. Pumping oil out nicely now. Took the whole head apart, cleaned out with the Mrs's new Polti steam cleaner (brilliant for getting the dirt out of small items like this), replaced it all and now oiling the chain nicely. As an aside, what lubricant should be used in the head unit / drive shaft gears?
  7. Thanks for the tips, got a day off tomorrow so will give those points a go (along with all the other much needed maintenance!)
  8. Had no oil lubing the chain on my Stihl combi saw. I took it all apart, cleared all channels but still no oil. I took off the bar and chain and ran the motor - no oil was coming out of the channel. Should oil flow out of the channel if the bar and chain are removed? Would this indicate the oil pump is dead?
  9. Bit confused now, different opinions abound. On Direct.gov website it says the following.... Bonfires and the law There aren’t any specific laws against having a bonfire, but there are several laws that deal with the nuisance bonfires can cause. I guess this relates to private bonfires in your own garden. but as long as no nuisance or danger, sounds ok to me.
  10. Thanks for the pointers. Take your points about chipping preferable but there's a 3ft deep ditch to cross so tad difficult. As it's on owners site it's surely not classed as commercial waste as it's his own. I think the preferable option is to make it clear to farmer he is responsible for the fire from lighting it to ending it.
  11. My question is are there any restrictions on burning tree waste on customers site? Customer is hoping to keep costs down so has asked if I can burn waste rather than chip. Access is difficult for a chipper as it's on farm land / small holding sheep field. There is loads of brash to burn and I know the fire will be going for at least the 3 days we will be there. Any restrictions I should be aware of? Searched online but nothing clear to me, all I can find is that it is illegal in Ireland!
  12. Thanks lads, Felling Licence it is then and I'll apply as don't trust farmer.
  13. Got a farmer asking me to fell 30 firs averaging 70 foot tall. Had a quick calculation and there looks like being over 5 cubic metres of wood there. Is it up to me, the contractor, to apply for a felling license or the farmer? Do they take 10 weeks to be receive as I've read?
  14. Nothing hairy underneath - Europaea I'd say? Some of the leaves are over 15cm long too.
  15. I'll go round to see the tree today and grab some close up's of the leaf - keen to learn myself. Thanks for all the info.
  16. 2 opinions that the guys can't agree between are T. Europaea and T. Platyphyllos. The Platyphyllos argument is the large leaves point towards it being that but as they are planted on a street line it is more likely to be a Euopaea. As I understand the Europaea is a hybrid of the Platyphyllos and the Cordata anyway so it may well be hard to distinguish 100%. Thanks for the responses, I'm leading towards the Europaea but will see if anyone else has a definitve id.
  17. another leaf pic....
  18. Can someone settle a minor identification argument? I have got some photo's of the tree which id cannot be agreed upon on the links below via photobucket. I won't say what either of the 2 party's think the tree is in case it sways your opinion, but let me know your thoughts - especially if you're 100% certain of the specie. It's the middle tree of the 3 below.......
  19. Thanks - guess it's safest to keep them all....
  20. Interesting comments - may I pose a question.... If you had a choice of someone to help you tomorrow between: 1) a climber with 5 years experience (but no tickets) who was recommended by a friend - or - 2) a climber just out of college with every ticket in the book????? Which would you choose? We had a super-qualified lad who we had to ask to leave within 1st week, no common sense and no sense of risk.
  21. Can anyone advise me if I need to keep old Site Specific Risk Assessment forms? They're stacking up in my mini-office and as each job is done and finished so I wonder if they are ever called on again?
  22. Big thanks to Cal (calarb01), sorted me out at short notice and top bloke too. Helpfull as well as thorough, will be going back.
  23. Thanks Andy, this is just the sort of thing that will make the boss listen - risking losing £££££'s ! Although from reading the notes, when it says "previously had an Improvement Notice", does that imply he was warned the first time he was caught? The boss has the attitude of not a problem if only risking a warning for first offence, i.e. he'll wait till after he gets a warning before he'll act.
  24. Thanks for all the very usefull comments. Sunday went well and I only did minimal climbing and was overly cautious. I think as Littletree says at the end of the day it's in my hands - no one is forcing me to do the work. I shall talk to the boss about tree surgery in general as I think he is not fully aware of the guides and controls in the industry compared with the less regulated nature of his normal grass cutting and hedge trimming work.
  25. True - my safety is the reason I want to have a competant person on the ground, but I want to find something to show the boss what must be in place rather than advisory group guidance - or is that in reality all there is? The only thing I think would change his mind if he knew he'd be liable for not providing suitable staff, then he'd make sure I'd get a descent guy to work with.
