  1. I've been having a good clear out in the workshop and getting rid of all the junk that's been saved that will never get used! we've got a old Stihl 090 (from my old man's younger years) - no chain brake - its got red and white casing and what i can remember from about ten years ago your ear defenders explode off with the noise it creates. The bar and chain look like new.

I was wondering if the saw had any use for milling or to a vintage chainsaw collector? does it have any value? does the bar fit on a ms880?

    Thanks!!

  2. I had exactly the same problems with my 201t.... thought it was a bag of s@!t, I even changed a brand new chain as i heard the chains were not tempered properly, it was still rubbish so i threw it on the shelf and went back to using my trusty 200(what was 10 times the saw). it sat there for months before i sent it back.

Stihl knew about these problems and told the technician to make sure the butterfly is sitting properly in the carb. if it is and is still running poorly it needs re-tuning. he had to get a special tool to adjust the carb settings as they cant be done without it.

Getting it back tomorrow so will let you know if its going in the bin or getting a thumbs up!!!

  3. Well be negative all you want!

Customer wants all timber logged up and is staying one sit.

I may have been wrong in my question in the first place, How justifiable is a crane financially and how fast does it speed the job up on average? (despite all trees are different ?)

Average take down time reduced by? as your not going to have a crane to take down a small tree!:001_huh:

  4. Hi

I have just looked at a large Beech to take down, it doesn't have a large crown spread and I can dismantle it without a crane but there is a large amount of heavy timber up to about 20ft. I am inexperienced in crane work! how fast and and easier will it make the job?

  5. I also live and carry out works in a area where most surrounding villages are conservation areas and work on a lot of trees carrying TPO's.

I understand that in some cases it can be a pain in the a** as basic garden maintenance can be classed as tree works.

A work in conservation areas quiet a lot and we must all go through the process properly. Its better for all and stops neighbours falling out and at the planning meetings everyone including the local authority have control over the changing landscape. Obviously we as professionals need to go through the correct procedures.

We all write the report or plans of proposed works on the condition we carry out the works.

When we submit our applications we should make the customer clear that we put a lot of time and effort into inspecting trees and carrying out the paperwork and in submitting these forms there should a charge.

If the client only want the inspection, advice and submitting the application there should be a charge. If your carrying out the works you can forget the charge!

I know it sounds really sad but if your getting the work there is no charge, its unfair and wrong but that's the way I presume most of us work?

  6. Thanks for your input lads

We have no problems getting rid of it up here I have people that will take it as hard and as fast as it comes. motor x tracks and riding schools.

I will try the places Parker p.m me tomorrow but any others to try please just to save me a slow trip home please lol

    Thanks again!

  7. I presume you lot have local dealers to get parts from???

At least with Stihl you can get parts the same or the next few days and all of this should be took into consideration about how good the machine is!

I personally will stick with what I use and know works great the Stihl HS81's cut fine, providing they are sharp!

I have had a few problems with one of our 81R's but its the valve on the fuel tank I think?

The other manufactures are probably lighter and and cut really fast. its just getting the parts!!

  8. I'm not vat registered yet, though I work for a few company's that are. I'm in my first year of trading as a company rather than a sole trader/climber for other tree gangs and casually employing a couple of staff. Still think I will be below the vat bracket, well I hope I will be as a lot of my work is with home-owners and the way things are round my area with so many tree surgeons trying to service such a small area, prices have reduced like mad, £700 worth of work is now only £500 and so on. The last thing I want to be doing is adding vat on then I would be increasing my prices when I'm having to drop them as they already had 2 cheaper quotes!

  9. Crank seal went on my ms200t a few weeks ago, so i rang around to get a replacement saw to replace it.

With discount I was quoted £370 inclusive of vat by a stockist 12 miles away, I rung up Browns who are more local to us but the cheapest they could supply the saw with a 14" bar was £420 as that's what they buy them in for.

    So a bargain at £370.00
