  1. This is true- but it can work out just as badly for a tractor on the same scenario you describe. I believe you need to hold records of maintenance done or proof that you have kept it in a roadworthy condition. I bet most don't and run more on the basis of when it breaks it gets fixed.

     

     

     

    Tractors are also not cheep torunning on the road, you can easily lose £3-4K plus on a set of tyres, and even if running on red you'd be lucky to be doing better than 8mpg (MOgs may differ?)

     

    £3k to change a wet clutch etc etc.

     

     

     

    Basically in answer to the OP there is no ideal setup, just work with what you have until you get a better idea of what your work requires then go from there because everyone probably thinks their setup is the best!

     

     

    Agreed, the main fallout over red diesel came about with the introduction of fast tractors, fastracs and mogs for example as people were running them as a get around to running a lorry for local haulage.

    But as an ex agri contractor, I agree the costs as detailed above means there really is no saving to be made.

  2. That would be nasty, but we don't usually haul with the tractor, it's just a crane and chipping unit, we chip to waste and drive home again.

     

     

     

    Here's a scenario for you.

     

     

     

    Your on your way back from a job in your 16 plate transit, it's 3/4 full and weighs 4.6 tons, you're towing a 750kg timberwolf. Whilst going down a country road an old lady pulls out in front of you, she simply doesnt look, (we've all seen this happen on occasion). So you brake but you still hit her at 30-40mph, she suffers head injuries and is taken to hospital. Because her injuries are life threatening the police do a full inspection of the crash scene and your vehicle and its load are taken away for testing. The cops look at your dash cam footage and accept that you weren't at fault.

     

    That night the old lady dies. The cops weigh your van and chipper and decide that even though you were not the cause of the accident your excessive weight had an impact on the severity of the accident by increasing your stopping distance, you are charged with causing death by dangerous driving. (Yes that is what you would be charged with!) The cops tell you that the maximum sentence is 14 years, minimum 1 year. Your insurance company refuses to payout and the old lady's family sue you for everything that you have.

    My original reply was posted tongue in cheek although I do know of two scenarios where it happened, neither are related, one involved a friend of mine who was running a mog at the time and had used it to take his compressor to a job to do some sandblasting, unfortunately it happened to be the same day customs and excise came to dip the wagons at the yard he was working, lost his mog, fine and back tax, the other was a agricultural contractor running red for gritting contracts same result impounded tractor ,fine and back tax.

     

    With regard to your transit scenario, this could happen with any combination of vehicle and I don't own a transit 😉

    Eats big bits so the saws run less

     

    Has a higher value when traded in

     

     

     

    Do you do Tree work Vespasian?I am curious as from memory you are yet to post a single picture of your set up.

     

     

     

    Until Tom gets pulled by vosa on his way back from a domestic job has his tank dipped, gets his tractor impounded and then gets screwed by HMRC for back tax on the red diesel they decide he's used over the years as he was doing non agricultural work and should have been on white.

  4. AA quoted £208 for two vehicles but didn't ask for vehicle details online quote, couple others I tried said they wouldn't cover the landrover once I put the reg number in, presumably due to age, I know the NFU one automatically cuts off one the vehicle is over 20 years of age.

  5. Evening all, any recommendations for commercial vehicle recovery cover, as I'm doing more with the digger and as the landrover is no spring chicken, I'm looking at getting some recovery cover, needs to be someone who will cover recovery of the landrover and trailer.

The firm, I worked for changed to Tp 175's just before I left, seemed good choppers, just little niggles, the toothed top roller means it won't always pull in the last twiggy bits on a branch, the lads used to not let it run down long enough for the roller to disengage so it then wouldn't start again without pressing the switch to disengage first and the bumpers are made of tin foil if using on site work.

     

    Produce smaller chip than the Jensen a we had before and with the exhaust being routed through the chipper chute it will pack it in the van, so you have to watch your load.

Carrots are struggling, two different varieties and neither seems to want to go, tomatoes are flowering, cucumber is growing after a slow start, best of everything is the peas, tried them in tubs this year, the two tubs that got left in the greenhouse have a good crop of pods already, the ones outside are about a fortnight behind.

Always helps if the stumps been left higher to give leverage, dig a ring all the way around the stump, may have to go a way out to get away from the thickest parts of the roots, use smallest bucket you've got so so you can dig between the roots, rocking the stump will show where the roots that are still holding are, if you can clean round them enough, you can then axe or saw them off and wriggle it again to find the next.

  10. 10 series fords are brilliant, the later x block engines are the ones to look for it was the earlier smooth blocks which were more likely to go porous and with the column change gears there were two types, the earlier "rubiks cube" ones were a pain to operate but the later version was better, but the standard floor mounted were better, if you find one with dual power that is really handy, it splits each gear down by half a ratio, very handy when towing or mowing etc.

Ok slightly forward planning, but I will require a freelance climber for two to three days in June sometime potentially, work is clearing fishing pegs on a river bank, so may need rigging/lowering, all arising staying on site as brash and I can take mini digger on site to help extract any larger pieces from the river, pm with a day rate if interested so I can get a price to the fishing club.
