  1. The rare lesser spotted Andrew Cowan out on a much needed RandR mission with the Hama, his reaction to the scene was priceless. Ganoderma applanatums are an abundant species in Whippendell woods, as are its dependent enomological interest the flat foot fly, which is also abundant in Whippendell woods. A site not to be missed when the chance arises.:thumbup1:P1110777.jpg.7d2ff280fff4f96768e5c5a5bb2d265e.jpg

  2. Cheers, might have to hunt a cheap copy down. The new Klaus, Mynors and a couple of random old ID books in the last month has just about done my book budget for the time being!

    lol, i know this path!

my new habit is wood and lathes and chisels and band saws and scroll saws and and.... and the evolution of the woodsman continues unabated:lol:

  3. I dont post much these days i know, but I think its a quality that counts kinda deal, so here is another offering from the Banks of the Yantra river Bulgaria and Sarcocypha coccinea (to follow from my own garden in Bulgaria, where I have veteran mulberries and Phelinus igniarius/fomitopsis pinicola and Phelinus torolosus close by. oh my world is rocking.

  4. i was referring to sloth but good to hear more people are taking it up, with any luck less beautiful wood will go straight on the fire...

Thats the main reason i started recently. If Im gonna cut a tree down/up then I am darn well going to ensure it gets its due respects.:thumbup1:

  5. Lovely wood there mate  I really regret selling my lathe 10 years ago! At the time the weekend seemed more important :what:

    couldnt sell mine now!

never too late to get back in to it mate...

not back into it at all, only been turning 2-3 weeks!

  6. I'e been away for a little while, busy with new ventures and catching up with friends among other things. Heres a few from this season all found in the best possible way, shared with friends, good times.

  7. A veritable feast there! The parasols are excellent as mushroom curry or in a stroganoff. Whats the griffolla like? Never found one nice enough to eat. I have tried various methods with fisti, I think I just don't like it, which is a shame as they are everwhere at the moment!

I'm never sure enough of my id on the boletes to eat them, which again is a shame as they seem really common under oaks and beech round here, and occasionally birch - the orange birch bolete being one of the few I have happily eaten.

Oh, and what are the two bottom left?

Making me jealous. Git! ;) I'll just have to settle for my first pint of home brewed stout...

    Delicious

Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app

the bottom left too are young fistis, debra really likes the acidic flavour of them especialy when young and still jelly like rather than fibrous. I spoke to a European guy who says they are great raw too, like a fruit, though havent tried it yet! will do soon though.

and davids on the money with the hericium cirrhatus, nice find

  8. Hi Guys, you know those old scraps we sling day in day out to the fire pile!

the slim bits of plank with the bark left on.....

Well I need a load about 20 lengths upto about 9ft long and 1-2ft wide if possible, any species will do preferably larch and all one species if possible.

willing to pay for them and need them ASAP

Herts area but willing to travel.

  9. So you think that on the cuts shown so far it looks better as the wood than the tree?

I love timber & trees myself... But first cut doesn't look boardroom quality to me...

no, but then it is a first cut, I persist, maintain a little faith, there is at least one board in that tree that will pay handsomely for the work in getting her free fromthe hulk.

Yes, it was a nice tree, but it will also get to live on in some way too
