  1. As a pom, I'm so tempted to say winging Ausie Steve, but I'll refrain. Good luck against SA today!
  2. To start I think you'll be fine with about 5 caribiners, but it depends what your set-up is. I use one for my mainline and friction hitch because I like to keep everything as neat as I can. Two for my lanyard (one at each end obviously). That'll get you into the tree and moving around. If you're going to be using re-directs etc, you'll need more. You'll also need a few to keep your kit on your harness, but you don't have to buy the triple locks for that.
  3. I could be wrong, but before you go ordering a Butterfly and expecting to find a seat, I think the Komet Dragonfly is the seated version. You'll find yourself having to order the seat separately otherwise. Personally, I'm not a fan of the seats. And Tom's given you some sound advice there. I have a Treemotion. It's adjustable in almost every way, and with a few days of tinkering is very comfortable.
  4. That's one of my concerns. I consider myself pretty competent, and haven't come across a situation I've felt uncomfortable dealing with for quite a long time. However when I see the competition climbers etc, and compare myself to them, and wonder if they are the sort of climbers I'll be competing for work with. I'd say I compare quite favourably with most of the climbers I've met through work, but it's a gamble I guess.
  5. Thanks Geoff. I'm not thinking of starting my own business though. I'm employed as a climber at the moment, and am thinking about going self employed and subbing myself out on a day rate.
  6. If the self employed don't have much free time, that's good news. I've always been employed and enjoy working hard. I get very restless when I have nothing to do. I'm not looking for the easy route... far from it. I've been working full time as climber for about five or six years and would describe myself as very competent. Does anyone reading sub out? How much should I expect to charge? Thanks for all the replies by the way!
  7. Hello everyone. I'm after some advice please. I've worked as a tree surgeon for several years now, but have always been employed by a company. I've recently had a little boy and am considering becoming self employed as a contract climber when his mum goes back to work. The idea is that I can still earn the same amount of money, but with more flexibility. My concern is finding the work and pricing myself correctly. Any thoughts?
