  1. A few days in and I'm fast realising this is one of the most profound things I've ever done in my life; or atleast that's the way I'm finding it. I'm back to 17th Century on my fathers side, 18th on Mothers. Mind blowing.

  2. Now the logs will start selling.

They never stopped! Not bragging, just mental this year; people had stoves flat out in first week of July, slight slow in Aug and now mad again. Not complaining altho seasoning has been a headache for the same reasons.

  3. A lot of British parish records have been put on line by the Mormons - it's part of their structure to need to be able to trace your ancestry but they make them available free for anyone who is interested. These are at:

    https://familysearch.org/

Genesreunited is also good - if you've got back to about the 19th century then there's a good chance of finding someone else with a shared ancestor who may have linked together other people's trees. It needs cross-checking, but gives a very good starting point. This route got me furthest back - one verified line now goes back to about 400AD.

  4. It seemed liked a generic post from some site advertising their wares. If not tell me more, am interested in family histories.

No, it's a well advertised site. Patrick Stewart on TV's Who do You think you Are? inspired me to start looking. You start building a family tree - it takes a lot of process of elimination but when you get something / someone it's like finding buried treasure; I was in tears a bit!

Did you sign up for the free trial?

Yes, not free for long though is it!!! Expensive after that (imo) but kind of realised I don't want more of my history going to the grave so it was time to get on with it.

  5. Baffled over the comment of the 346 being shakey - I have serviced a large number of saws now, part of the servicing/repair regime is to let them run for 10-15 minutes on hard standing and the 346/357 are some of the only saws not to spin and move around by themselves:

Crikey! Most animated, fall-over saw I've ever had! Good ridance to it; the more I think of it the more I hate it.

BTW definition of the a word as per urban dic:

"An overused adjective intended to denote something as "cool" or "great" but instead winds up meaning "lame." This is actually a reflection of the lameness of person using the word, the degree of which is directly proportionate to difference between the user's perspective of the so-called awesome object / person / situation and that of a reasonably sober, well-informed observer."

  6. Case No. 1 tractor oil.

I took the 1.9 TDI engined Ford/vw Galaxy to 250,000 plus miles running on that stuff.

On the origional pump injectors turbo clutch head gasket and exhaust system.

    she ate starter motors though

After such runs as Spain and Portugal in 1999 towing a trailer with a roof box fully loaded uphill motorway work in 40 deg celcius with the oil temp reading 120 or 125 deg.

And the air con running full blast:biggrin:

    well impressed.

but I always simmered the turbo

still got her parked up for independant strip down and inspection if anyone interested:001_rolleyes:

still starting (albeit a trifle reluctantly) in -15 C and running like a clock when parked up

be interested to see if the VW507 spec oil does as well for my latest 12/15 year project vehicle with the wee 1.6 VW diesel

Yes, VAG PD oils...!!! We use 505.01 in a Bora 130; C-I and C-J spec for denox cats and DPF's demand the later ones I think; typically less minerals; valve train durability was a major concern when low phosphorus oil intro'd; you can't win!

  7. We used to run Mobil Pegasus 605/610/615 ash # in Cat 3516, Jenbacher 320 et al, Cummins QSV etc but they are straight grades for base load generation at constant 1500 rpm. Motor Oil for Automotive / Plant only in this test. Think Mobil themselves did the UOA. Used to enjoy doing borescope. Oberdorfer did a 148 kWe unit with a very sweet Liebherr 6 cylinder, whoops derail!

  8. I spent 13 years in the diesel research industry before returning to the woods but that's another story.

I'm about to embark on a long term diesel engine oil analysis project similar to that which I did in labs in the 90's where multi-grade CC/D+ oils were tested in low-speed single-cylinder, medium-speed multi-cylinder and high speed multi-cylinder test bed engines.

The tests will be looking for TAN and TBN endurance (cross-over) under differing duty cycles (start-stop, medium load-medium speed, high load-low-medium speed and medium-load-high speed), MOFT performance, wear, viscocity, iron, brass, lead, copper etc, fuel dilution and all the usual suite of tests, flashpoint blah blah blah (limited targets).

We intend to test quite a number of "common" lubes and some less common ones, some mineral base, some semi-synth, some pao synth and some ester synth.

And now the point in telling you all this: If any of you has an oil brand you would like included please let us know and it will be done! Perhaps you'd like to know the durability of your chipper, mog or truck engine?

    Cheers.

PS - oh and the project is anticipated to take 18 months minimum!
