  1. Sorry mate...it was a bit of a "how long is a piece of string? "

Glad you found it informative. Have you an update on the tree in question? I relish the opportunity to feel important and knowledgeable ...it doesnt happen very often eh!:001_tongue:

Well I turned up to the customer ready to blow his head off with my lengthy in depth knowledge and understanding of acute oak die back.

Only to learn it got hit by a hurricane ten years ago! lol.

Oak tree is a whopper tho. About 5 feet across at the base then twin stems at about 8 feet. The knuckle underneath the stems is a foot or so wider then the base. Tree is roughly 80 feet tall possibly more.

Tree is in a bad way. In the center most stems are completely dead and falling to pieces. Wood at about 2 feet diameter has turned a lighter shade of brown and has lots of holes and dead branches aorund it.

A few large stems at the bottom look healthy enough but man wants it removed.

Lots and lots of decent wood to come away from this one.

Yeah that important knowledgeable feeling is quite good so ive been told!! :-)

  2. From the erudite description you have made thus far; Senescence, ask the audience, phone a friend!

At first i thought u was insulting my ERUDITE complex well written diagnosis of a poor oak tree not having a blooming summer.

But found your attachment very helpfull.

    Thanks for the info

  3. No unfortunately no pics yet. It was just a brief description that i got " tree is dying from the top" and thats it.

Theres a good chance i can piece it together once i go and see the tree but just wonderd if there was anything disease related that i didant no about.

    What is water table issue?

  4. Should have plenty of life left in it only being a 2000 model. weird that its ok bore cutting and not cross cutting. Does it start ok?? I think theres a possibility that the bar heating to much could cause it not to cross cut very well.

If the chains getting tight then as soon as you apply the saw to wood it its going to be working against alot, then if it isnt that sharp even more stress for it.

Its fairly unlikely that thats the problem but it could be . . .

When you say let u down do u mean not wowrking atall now?

  5. My mate went to pick up his nice new shiny ipohone today. Qued up for twenty minutes then got told they sold out! lol.

Should do what i do, stick with the old sony ericcson, does what its meant to and wont ruin your day if found to have cracked screen due to log carrying.

  6. I dont mind abit of quoting. Its a good feeling when you have a real productive day pricing up and pulling in some work you look forward to.

Only thing i dont like is turning up to a real nasty job, lots of ivy and crazy ideas of what soemone wants you to do to a tree. But they are generally outweighed by the better so it just part of the game really.

  7. That is a tasty peice of work that, why is it that the contractors went ahead? Surely they saw the roots as they where digging away or is it just a case of money buys happiness?[/quote

Could be that they got the permission from the council and thought that if there was anything wrong with it they would have been refused? They may have no knowledge of tree biology etc whatsoever and relied on and trusted the tree officers advise.

Cant blame them in that respect.

  8. Pleased for you chris, its a buzz when the phone starts ringing! :001_smile:

Never never give a price over the phone. I refuse no matter what. Just explain that there are far too many variables to be accurate and one persons idea of a "big" tree can be alot diffrent to anothers and that quotes are free. good times:thumbup1:

  9. Just phone every tree firm in your area and ask for any work they have wether its a single day or more, mention that you can be flexible too so short notice shouldnt be a problem., someone will give you a call. All it takes is someones worker to pull a sickie at the last minute and hopefully the person they phone is you. Then you get in there prove yourself and youve sown your seed. :001_smile:

  10. Yh the smell and dust was the worst. These sheds were small, about 5ft tall. Im 6ft 4 so that made it hard lol

I get a little bit annoyed of people saying they cant get a job, theres work out there, it might not be what you ideally looking for but it will pay the bills.

my first truck was a flare side 1 ton pick up and i had to shovel the chippings out the back as it was a non tipper. At the back the board was shorter then me and shovelling half sort of bent down is no fun on your back atall i no were your coming from with that!! :laugh1:

My theory on the work situation is. . If you sat down with a phone and the yellow pages and phoned it cover to cover asking for any work that was going even if it was one day i struggle to belive you d get to the other end without a single day in the bag!! Thats what id do if i had to. :001_smile:

  11. I have a transit and cant really fault it. Mine has a cage on the back (boarded up) and barn doors on the back and it holds loads. drives well with the weight aswell. Plenty of room in the cab too wich is ideal if your going to be taking the third person along. Cant go wrong with it IMO.

Only thing i suppose wouldnt go amiss is abit more power as mines only 90 hp but i dont mind saving abit of diesel, and there are more powerfull ones if that was a problem.

I no someone who has a dyna and i like it but theres a few down sides. Firstly the cab is tiny even for two people its cramped. Secondly you cant get a great deal of brush on the back, it holds nowhere near as much as a transit would. Oh and its thirsty aswell.

Good points, looks great, sounds great and has plenty of power.

Hope that helps in some way.

  12. Yeah you just have to do whatever you can do earn abit of cash. I`ve found that arb has a few diffrent things to offer.Climbing, ground work, basic labouring and abit of log cutting and splitting. I have and will do any of those to keep busy and I never let ego get in the way of anything.

The key thing i think is to get your foot in the door way with as many people as you can.

You only need to have 3 people who each give you abit of work to start getting fairly busy.

Cant you get away with just doung the cs 38 which if im right you can climb on as long as your supervised? (Someone please correct me if im wrong)
