  1. Not familiar with the 4.6 in particular, I've got a 3.9 disco, but assuming similarities with other land rovers etc then as above head gasket. Mine was blowing and for a couple of months I thought it was a wheel bearing on the way out, It sounded like a squeak, then it developed into more of a tick. There was no noticeable loss of water during this time either until one day towing a load uphill and I noticed plumes of white smoke from the exhaust. It seemed to only lose water under heavy load.

    Other majorish poblem I've had is with the steering box which is a common failure point, the seal at the bottom goes and leaks power steering fluid. Thats a recon/replacement job.

    There's always minor stuff wrong, mostly electrical you get used to it and most you can live with for a while at least. It's a good vehicle all in all, If it died today I'd buy another tomorrow.

  3. If the insurance companies are going to start charging newbies more, than I hope they are going to charge me less for not claiming in 15 years.

     

    There not cherry picking there clients I hope.:sneaky2:

     

     

    I would also like to see the reason why they dont want to insure younger less experienced tree workers.

     

    Are there really that many people claiming on their insurance?

     

     

    I dont know any that have.

     

    The excess is like £500 so that must surely cover the majority of minor incidents.

     

     

     

     

    Often wondered about the high insurance costs myself, I've never claimed and don't know anyone who has.

    Funny enough the guys I'm going with have actually done some of that walkway in El Chorro some years ago, but only what they had to to reach a particular sport route they wanted to do. I know they found a couple of sections very hairy indeed and I can now see why. Cheers.

  5. Heading to Cortina, Italy in September and going to have a bash at some via ferrata. Wondering if anyones had a go and got any experiences/ recommendations/ advice.?

    We're competent on rock and just fancy getting up into the mountains a bit as bouldering is my main type of climbing and this will be a new style to us all. cheers.

  6. Thanks guys, very surprised to find no more direct services to Norway. Explains some of the quotes he had for removals. Shame as well, I remember going out on deck on a misty morning and been stunned by the scenery with the ferry sailing up the fjords, it certainly beat Dover-Calais.

  7. I know there are folks up that way on here who may be able to give me some info. I'm looking to get to Bergen with a landrover + trailer to collect some belongings for a friends son who's moving back here.

    Years ago I went there by ferry from Newcastle, but it now appears this ferry no longer runs.

    Much appreciated if anyone who may travel UK to Norway can give me any info on routes available and rough idea of cost if possible, Cheers Alex.

  8. I have a v8 discovery which I had converted a couple of years ago. Cost about 1100 then for a basic system. Had no problems and have easily covered the cost of the system. Performance is not quite as good as petrol but in normal driving you wouldn't notice it. A bit more noticeable when towing, but still not an issue. Only other down sides is loss of space in boot due to tank (you can get tanks underneath at higher cost) and my system only has range of about 170 miles

    No real problems getting gas, In fact it runs only on gas at the moment as the fuel pump has packed up and I haven't got round to replacing it yet. It's been like that for about 3 months. Longer journeys you need to know where the gas stations are but you can get a gas station atlas or just google your journey before you go. I've been to the middle of France and back without the petrol backup with no problems at all.

    Prior to the discovery I had a vauxhall senator 3.0 running on gas, again no issues in the 3 years or so I had that.

    You don't get the same mpg out of gas, I reckon 14 mpg in the discovery on gas compared to 17 on petrol. There was less of a difference in the senator.

    Cost wise I think I save about 35% overall with the discovery.

    Definitely would seriously consider conversion in any large engined vehicle with my previous experiences.

    Incidently, the fuel pump on the discovery packed up due to running on gas and not noticing having no fuel in the petrol tank due to a leak which burnt out the pump. so do keep some petrol in your tank.

  9. I think screwgates are safer than 3way, its just the fact that alot of people didnt bother screwing the gate up. Ive used 3ways in tree work and have had them come open infront of my eyes, use screwgates when rock climbing and didnt have any trouble once they were screwed up.

     

    Me too. Much happier climbing on a screw gate. Which out of habit I check regularly. only krab opened up on me dangerously is a three way.

  10. I haven't cracked smoking yet, got a 20 - 30 a day habit, been smoking for 25 years. I have 'given up' a number of times for long periods of over a year, with my best being three years. In the last decade I have definitely been a non- smoker more than 50% of the time which I guess must be better than not stopping at all.

    I know a number of successful quitters who have stopped for long periods and used various methods, probably all those mentioned already. The most 'hardcore' smoker I know has remained stopped for many years now after using 'Ziban' or something like that from the doctor, but it can have side effects.

    Best success for me comes with patches just to ease over the first few days and willpower from then on. If I can get passed the first few days I can stop for a long time although may crack under a combination of stress and lots of beer.

    I also find NOT avoiding situations where you smoke, like the pub, and getting used to not smoking in those situations quicker, is better in the long run. Different ways work for different people and you have to find whats best for you.

    I reckon reading this ongoing thread may not help though, it'll just keep reminding you of cigarettes and smoking:001_tongue: seriously though, Good luck.

  11. cracked ribs trying to get a stump out by hand. Probably about 8-10 inch diameter we'd left it about 5ft high. Me & mate had it bent over to the ground with both of us standing on it bouncing up and down. He was a fair bit heavier than me and slipped off......

     

    The stump sprang back upright catapulting me into the air and i came back down on the upright stump smack on my ribs.

    soooooo painful, made worse because I was laughing at my stupidity and how it must have looked:blushing:

    Are you guys still cutting conifer and hedges? Or are you going to turn work down because you’re responsible Arbs with a conscience? :sneaky2:

     

     

    I wouldn't commence a job knowing that wildlife is nesting in it, including pigeons and squirrels. I know many have a different view on this, but personally don't like disturbing or killing anything, regardless of what the law states. Have usually found people will wait, but then my work is generally domestic with no great urgency.

  13. Or we're all be stone cold dead and rotting where we fell in the food lines. Bullet holes visable in our exposed skulls like the extra sockets of non existant eyeballs.
