To add to my wife's reply, unfortunately most "exotic conifer" seed appears to be virtually sterile when grown in our Northern hemisphere, if of UK origin -it will rarely germinate - this applies to Wellingtonia, Monkey Puzzle, Taxodium, Metasequoia, Southern Pinus and Picea. Try sourcing seed from Chiltern Seeds, which although expensive, is generally viable and OKfor small quantities, but DO follow germination instructions and invest in damping off fungicidal treatment such as Cheshunt Compound. Ad in local paper on weekly basis through year, pick up new customers out of season when people want to fill log stores in summer or run a heating system /cooker etc. Web site gets good response, good advice: paying to get your site optimised so it gets on 1st page google worth it. Local parish magazines can be really good, shop windows etc, sign writing, good cards to hand out to people who show interest when they see what great logs you have to sell. Only sell good dry and seasoned logs, you'll get lots of recommendations!

Have a large horse chestnut branch fallen on roof, insurance job so money no object, have organised a platform next Friday(5th August) , but need an extra pair of hands..interested? other stuff in pipeline but plenty to do if you are up for it. DAD

Have been asked for nice white Silver birch branches, around 2 inches diam. Think it is for some 'artistic' project, nothing available round here. Location Bedford, and they will collect, think they want a carboot full. Can anyone help out?

Tried to post something about a Yew I had to check out today, can you look and see what you think, never seen anything like it before, also saw several on way home once I started to look! advised client to get foliage samplesdone for phytophthora.

Any idea what is wrong with this Yew? mature spreading crown, no obvious causes.
Not seen this in 25 years, crown nearly all brown, foliage sparce, since last year, nearby yew (across road) looking similar, but 3 adjacent large Irish fastigiate yews very healthy. Looked for signs of phytophthora but none at all.

I agree, seasoned dry softwood is popular with new woodburner owners as they find it easy to light, also our local stove supplier uses it in the showroom, and always recommends it to new customers. The guy from stove shop gets fed up with trying to sort out stove problems which have been caused with people burning green hardwood logs. I think this is happening mainly because there is not enough hardwood around to meet demands, so Firewood sellers sell green wood, I meet customers every week who are fed up with being sold green hardwood as 'Firewood', after they have tried burning seasoned soft wood they are happy to keep using it.

We sell almost 100% Sitka, dried to 25% moisture, it burns clean and hot, lots of happy customers with boilers and stoves use it all year round. We have avoided buying Larch and scots pine as they have a higher resin content, but have bought and sold larch before and it makes good firewood if well seasoned, around 18months to 2 years for timber up to 8-9" diameter.
