Urgh! I had a bite from one whilst cutting a hedge in '07.

My arm swelled up at the shoulder and I had a fever type aching bones man flu for a day.

One of my irregular groundies has just been stung by a hornet (frelon in French) and his hand blew up to the size of a softball.

We just dismantled a cedar on Friday and evacuated the wood and chips back to our place.

I have a list of people who are interested in free firewood, so I call the most local one (French)

The woman asks me what type of wood is it?

When I tell her its cedar she refuses it and asks for some free oak instead!

I tell her that I sell oak for 200euros+ per cord and that only softwoods are free as a gesture to those on a limited income.

Thanks but no she says and hangs up!

The word from Mr Turner boss fella head honcho of Greenmech is that the new E.U regs for trailers don't come in till October 2012.

Somehow, I've got to manage until then with the wee chipper or bite an unsavoury bullet and buy a French homoglated chipper which is several grand more than the versions sold in the U.K.

One major hospitalisation to re-attach tendons when cutting a yew hedge in '07 the ladder moved and the hired hedge cutter kept going after I let go of the throttle and it came down and went through my left arm.

I bought a better hedge cutter and a henchman:sneaky2: (which is a pile of crap but does the job...just)

Arrived at a job to find the tree ringed with steaming piles of brown matter.

Got out a trowel I keep for the purpose and got on with cleaning up, flicking the offensive material into the hedge.

The client was mystified and couldn't understand the problem until I explained about ropes, feet, ladders etc don't mix to well with the brown stuff.

Even so, the lack of forethought of some clients and also the lack of garden hygiene especially with kids, swimming pools and free running dogs really does amaze me at times.

Even dogs step in it when running around then trail it into the house or jump up onto laps.

The same issue with cats and flower beds.

An animal that actually buries its turds must be applauded but not when it enters a house and jumps onto the bread board using the same paws!

I recently spoke to a fellow arb who informed me he was fully booked some 2 months ahead of our lead time.

My jaw dropped until I understood that he works alone most of the time and that I run a team of 3 some 50% of the time and growing.

Effectively, we are working many more hours than the single man.

Its also makes life far smoother and safer with 3, one climber with a second climber/groundy operating the chipper and a third highly competant older arb capable of anticipating the jobs that need doing and getting on with it.

Next year we are going to take on a work experience youngster who will probally work a week on/off or longer periods with spells in college (or correctional institution ):001_tongue:

Next year we hope to have 2 teams out regularly.

5 of us, 2 chippers, 2 trucks/vans etc

One team with the wee chipper and another with the new road tow.

I don't think I can handle more than that for now.

With 2 teams of 2 and one boss fella to float between, mend stuff, price up, prospect for work etc.

2 business partners (the climbers), 2 groundies and a spotty.

Its all going forward and I just wanted to share things with you guys and generate a chat about expanding without too much stress.

Currently, at least until 2012 there is no single E.U spec.

Britain, Germany and France have different standards.

For France, the cycle bars in front of the wheels, the tow hitch and the distance from hitch to axle seem to be the main differences between the British standards and French.

As for most things, you are fine until you have a prang and then Gendarmes look closer at items such as registration and insurance.

Hundreds of Brits run around in 'illegal' vehicles in France towing unregistered trailers, the Gendarmes (thick as pig **** and just as stubborn) don't always know what they should be looking for, if they did then they would have a field day.

I'm having a cert.con done special for the trailer now at the manufacturers expense.

Now off for a jolly Saturday grinding near Dinan, 12h days 7day weeks at the moment K'ching!

I have been waiting until 2012 to buy a road tow chipper because of this arse of a regulation.

In France you need to have cycle bars in front of your wheels and a French homoglated chassis, brakes and towhitch before you can register a trailer.

Its a chuffing minefield!

I just bought a £4000 trailer that fully conforms to E.U regs and YET cannot be registered in France...

I am...livid, both with the bloody small minded French officials and the manufacturer for mis-representing their product.

I will resolve this even if I have to use Sir Charles Simmons our family lawyer.

Now he is a right B#?!ard...
