  1. I am going for the changeover switch, all said and done its only £200 for a decent three phase unit and the whole yard is sorted. We have one of those massive diesel tow along lighting towers and the generator on that is a silent pack three phase unit, I will have a chat with the sparks and see about making up some leads off of that. I dont understand where the earth comes from on a genny , is it not really the same as the neutral?

    You would need to put an earth spike in, to earth the genny. You need to speak to a local spark and they will explain what you need.

  2. If anyone wants a set configured like this I can talk to pramac first but I would imagine the link in the plug with decent label sounds like the way to go. Because then the set still has floating earth and only 120v max to earth.

     

    There is a book called Diesel generator handbook by Mahon published by Butterworth Heinmann came out in 1992. I have used it to get my Apprentices a head start before they go to college. I think its about £500 now but sometimes they come up on ebay for £75

    Sorry I'm a qualified spark, that doesn't do a lot with generators, so I was making the most of picking Steve's brains.

  4. You should be able to add a link but talk to the manufacturer first to make sure. The link openspace man put up describes it well. The last time I worked on a small set must be 15 years so not really my thing. That briggs and stratton link has been around for at least 20 years so not sure if its up to date with the latest regs.

  5. I have in the past centre tapped them so that rcd's work. I would keep the floating earth because at least you only have 55/ 120volts to earth. If you centre tap it and someone uses it portable especially if they dont earth it you will have 240 volts to earth. The answer is I dont know on the Pramac.

     

    Many thanks. Rather than centre tapping the genset would a link in the plug between earth and neutral do the same, with a suitable warning label attached?

     

    I've got some portable shower blocks that I need to feed from a generator and they need RCD protection hence my question.

     

    Can you recommend any good books on generators and there associated wiring?

  6. I recommend the Britax LED beacon. I've fitted these to my friends two trucks and the look the business.

     

    I've got two 8 led work lights on the back of the defender and run them from a second battery. I left them on for a few hours the other week without flattening the battery where the old halogen ones I would only get a couple of hours out of before they where dead.

  7. Many years ago people stopped using orange hi-vis jackets as in some artificial light they would look black, so no use, hence the move to yellow. But I don't think you get this affect with modern lights.

  8. I've fitted a discovery drop arm ball joint and upgraded discovery stealing arms with a steering damper relocation kit. This gives me an easily replaceable ball joint at each end rather than the traditional defender one.

  9. When I picked up my Defender 90 from new I was fully anticipating the almost road pattern General tyres they were fitting at the time.

    My plan was to fit either the General Grabber AT2 which I think are superb or try out some Coopers which appear to be gaining in popularity.

     

    Much to my surprise I had the first set of Continental Cross Contact AT into the dealership which looked pretty handy so I thought I'd leave them on.

    After 42,000 miles these tyres still look pretty much like new and the performance across a whole range of conditions has been truly remarkable.

     

    They are quite a narrow profile and I'd prefer something a little wider in some applications, but after 3 seasons of hard work they've not let me down and the wear rate seems excellent.

     

    I'd be interested in any Cooper ST reviews?

    We've got Cooper ST on the 110 there a good all round tyre. Not had problems with them. Only problem is you can't get them anymore so will be going over to AT2's when they need changing.

  10. You need a relay & idealy an on-off-on switch. You need to put a feed from the reversing lights to one of the on terminals of the switch, then an ign or perm live to the other on, on the switch. |Then put the middle contact of the switch to the coil of the relay.

     

    This way you can have the work lights on by themselves, or on with the reverse lights or off all together.
