  1. Most the students I've seen come along, as is said, lack confidence, and this will only come with practise. Perhaps instead of rushing as many thru as possible in a year, the trade would be better served if trainees were on an apprenticeship scheme, doing each element in stages, learning and remembering as they go along, rather than trying to "cram" too much info into too little brain, on 2-3year programme?

  2. My concern is that although we seem to have better training regime in place for students, how is it that once they pass their tickets they come out to the workplace knowing nothing!! I'm sure the "old school" style of education must have worked better. I've seen students come along, with tickets, who cant tie the basic knots, dont understand lowering techniques, and cant operate a saw, yet feel they're worth £100+ a day. Are we really improving training, or just creating more jobs for the training fraternity?? I know this isnt really constructive in line with the topic, but I feel this is a valid point.

  3. Over the years I've noticed blokes not collect their blue book [before id card ] from employers, when they leave them, can employees get new copy's of their blue book/id card from NPTC?

The blue book, certificates, etc, are the property of the person named on them, not the employer. When you leave the employment of a company, they should be handed to you. Some companies have a stipulation that if you leave within so long of taking the courses, then you should re-imburse the company for the expense of the courses. Some companies try to hang on to the paperwork, sowhen they go for contracts they can show a fully qualified team!! Basically a "ghost" crew. B4 the AA,ISA, RFS get so high and mighty about other issues, I think this is something that must be jumped on, hard!!

  4. I understand you Andy but no one in the right mind would have done this job, not only was it road side in a very busy area but the guy clearly had no right to butcher someone else's tree's and i could tell the min he slurred his first words and smelt the alchol on his breath that he would not pay the money that job would have been worth.

I wasnt having a dig about this instance, but more about morals in general. in the past companies have asked all kind of things of the workforce, to the point of being totally immoral. The bottom line is if you want to eat next week, you do the job. If not, bye-bye!

  5. Its easy to have morals when times are good, there's food on the table and beer in the fridge! I defy anyone with a young family to feed, mortgage/rent to pay, to maintain their morals when things go tits-up!! Morals dont pay for food on the table, and surely (from a moral stand-point) your first priority is your family's well being, not some poxy little tree. Did I just say that!! THats the firing squad for me, then!:D

  6. Danequip bluechip now theres a real chipper for you . Single feed roller, engine that puffs out black smoke all the time and roars like a machine ten times it size . Cant beat it.

Danequip.... thats the one that loves to eat conifer isnt it? it does need a good beating tho!!:P
