I've found most of the mags are now "old news" since the internet forums have taken hold. This is where it really seems to happen these days, and then about 6 months down the line it'll be in some mag.

Good to see a lot of new faces signing up, dont be strangers, post away please

I bumped into a bloke at work who kept saying he was starting up some forum about trees, Arbchat or summat like that. Dunno what happened to his big idea, cant see it working out, I mean who wants to talk about tree stuff all night?

You didn't mention brakes. Does it stop???????? QUOTE]
It does if there's a Saab in front!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Off topic guys a tad, but one word of warning guys, I was talking to a friend of mine the other day, he also carries out air-spade work, we both came to the conclusion that this tool possibly isn't the best tool for relieving compacted soil, the potential for the tree to blow over are too great in our opinion, i've seen air-spades used to decompact soil within the whole of the root zone, thats a lot of very relieved roots imo, now verticle mulching carried out properly is a different ball game..
As I dont get involved in this area, Lee, can you explain this in a little more depth, maybe in a separate thread. Surely decompaction in only done in the surface area for the feeding roots, to maybe 10-12inches? Not the main supporting and structural roots? Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying??

Given where it was found, I would say it's an old fruiting body of meripillus, I've seen several large ones this season

Just had a thought re-reading thru this thread, CLIMBERS be aware, especially on bright, sunny days this time of year, that the sun is lower in the sky! Hand signals are fine IF you can be seen, but staring up at a tree trying to decipher the smallest detail against a bright ball of fire is very difficult, especially in a hurry, so dont assume that the groundies can see what you mean, and groundies, if you cant see, make sure you understand the climber, DONT guess.

Not my job, probably would have been ok (and its nice to have shiny kit sometimes)

Yep, ok now ta!

well, chipper on quad clearing overgrown garden, this is the smallest Schliesing model (hired from Chippertech), ideal for narrow access, no wider than the quad.

A good climber must understands he/she is the most hated person on the team, possibly the planet.. and so has to be nice to all those whingeing moaning hard done by groundies......
What???? As a groundie, the one thing I really like is a good climber. He is considerate to those around him, quick yet efficient. He maintains eye contact with at least one of the groundies (and vise versa), he knows where each person is on the ground, (within reason). He communicates clearly and concisely, rather than assumes everybody knows what he's thinking (after all we ARE thick groundies). He throws his hangers down as he is working his way out, unless the groundie can retrieve it with throw-line/polesaw. He sits and enjoys a cuppa/fag/mars bar when he's down, but then willingly mucks in to help if necessary (although most of the clearing should be nearly done already) Of course, if he's a freelancer, and is paid to bash out tree after tree, things will be a little different.
