Hi there,

I'm preparing a presentation on technology used in the field of Forestry/Arboriculture.

Can anyone with experience in the field provide a brief description of the benefits or practical uses of mapping technology (GIS, AutoCAD etc)? Google turns up very little relative to actually giving me an idea of why and how these technologies are used in every day applications.

Really anything anyone can give me would be helpful.

The normal or common uses would be in the Arb surveys (BS5837) for planning applications. Although I'm sure there are other uses.

I think the lack of responses is more due the openness of your enquiry than anything else.

Greatest benefits: portable data storage, speed of data entry, retrievable data

Paper gets wet and blows away and is too bulky.

Useful application in stock inventory, condition surveying & planning

Dynamic link between map & database

Digital mapping provides accessible shareable visual data

Dead reckoning is more accurate than GPS in the urban environment, GPS is better in woodland.
