Mid Line Knots With Ring, Alpine Butterfly or Double Fig 8

What's the preferred option for adding an anchor ring to a mid line knot?

 

I'm having trouble with the alpine butterfly with 'Bunny Ears' and find the Double Fig 8 with 'Bunny ears' easier but the rope enters/exits the knot at a sharper angle than it does with the alpine butterfly, is there any significant difference in practice?

Just get the alpine bunny cracked. If you can tie an alpine (various methods, all on YouTube) then thread the ring, tuck the bight through and back over the ring.

I normally tie the Alpine Butterfly using the '3 wraps around your hand' method but of course the bight is too short.

Yeah me to... Just try and pull out more of the middle one... Takes a bit of hand wiggling.!!

Sorted, eventually I think, just one point, when you push the bight back through the knot do you take it back underneath the knot and around over the ring or just flip it back up over the ring?

From normal alpine.... Put the bight back on itself through the 'hole' it came through, then up/out and over the ring/now doubled bight. It should then look like a doubled up alpine ie more or less following the same knot lines.

Ok got it, yeah I'd need to slow Adam's video down (quite) a bit

I can never rely on the 3 wraps method to be right. Try the one shown on this video, it's less prone (for me) to go wrong but for you you'll see you can pull the bioght out as long as you want before tucking and setting the knot.

 

There's an even easier way to tie it, but it's not so good with mits on.

 

You can cow hitch the ring to the bight, no need to passs the bight back through the knot. Or use a steel screwgate through the bight.

The problem with the one shown in the video is that his right arm gets in the way just at the point where I need to see what he's doing.

If your rope is a bit stiff, just choking the ring on the bight can be at risk of it popping back over the ring and up against the working line....adding friction on retrieval. Great for a base anchor though.

And a steel carabiner has a gate, if you are suggesting a straight swap for the ring, I'd have to say it's a bad idea.
