After reading that study, forgive me for being stupid, but would it not be far less hassle and less management, to just plant a smaller species of tree at the side of the large one. Rather than doing a 90% crown butcher and then having to religously maintain the said butchered monstrocity.

 

Just do a crown reduction until the new tree has become established.

 

I didn't read it fully but when I studied construction, it is always a constant battle to stabilise moisture content within a clay soil. There aren't just Trees to consider and has you are fully aware it is a fine balancing act to keep a tree sucking the same amount of moisture to keep a balance between shrinkage of the clay and heave.

 

I just think the world is going mad, why don't they just build houses on concrete rafts

Well the bre document really just shows that light pruning doesn't really do anything to affect moisture extraction.

 

The document below (too big to attach) makes the point that if a tree is definately the cause. The only solution is removal.

Concrete rafts -exactly! Engineer the problem away, British engineers are supposed to be among the best in the world.

 

Even correctly depthed foundations would solve it.
