I've had very good success with hyway big bore kits

 

As a general rule, all am cylinders need porting work to perform anywhere close to OEM. Some can perform very well after extensive porting, but how long they will last is an open question....

The top cover issue can be solved in different ways, it isn't really a "showstopper" - I just don't know the details.

The older 61's top cover needs a tiny hole cut in it for the spark plug boot, about an inch square. Newer ones ,fit OK. Seem to go well with the original 61 carbs, a big improvement in power.
