Well another week another boot fair and another bargain axe/hatchet that I can't identify

This appears to have been re rung upside down at some point and the only marking I can find on the head is the faint remenants of a 3 fairly central on the pol end. So not even a country to go on but figured somewhat like the last one that it's got to be worth a £2 punt. Any help in identifying it will be greatly received.

Thanks Graham

Hopefully this pic should show what little remains of the markings

There appears to be another two letters/numbers before the 3 but they are so faint that the camera can't pick them out and I can't make out exactly what they are. Any ideas on cleaning methods that might make things clearer but won't damage the markings any further?

I'll try the wire wool cheers John. The head shape looks about right for a plumb however the shape of the 3 looks wrong as all the plumb markings I can find have rounded edge 3s and this has a pointy top edge. Whatever it is it seems a to be decent bit of steel and once I've sourced a nice bit of ash to re handle it (the right way up) I've every confidence that it'll be a good useable tool
