timber cracker needed

need to break up some big poplar stems before they go through a chipper and my original idea of mini digger with atom splitter looks like it won't work as the operator said they couldn't get it to bite into pop. as its going through my own boiler I'd like it to be as dry as possible and I think it'll help being split.

any help, pointers, advice or contacts gratefully received
