weekend activities (pic) + questions

We used our ms880 with the 48" bar+chain for the first time today, we cut a large ash tree which had fallen in the gales into large slabs to transport behind one of the tractors and trailers, i havnt used such a large chainsaw for a few years and that one was well used and worn, i couldnt believen how poweful and effortless this new saw is, sounds lovely at full revs aswell. Only managed to take one pic, got my new truck stuck, shouldnt have attempted it anyway, was loaded up with slabs of poplar + saws and the field is a flood plain so had to use one of our fergies to pull me free. how embarrassing

 

 

couple of questions

 

1 - can you get a rollermatic 48" bar? reason i ask is because the one supplied is a non roller, does the rollers make much difference? our 25" bar is a rollermatic.

 

2 - chain oil - when using the 48" bar what amount of chain oil should we be using? book is not very clear, i ran it high but wondered what it should be on, book says run on e (ematic) guess it should be higher for longer bar.

 

3- whats the ideal fuel mixture? again book is not very clear, presume this saw has a cat so that is 50:1 ??

 

4 - i have no experience of climbing, i intend to go on some courses and also learn from professionals but in the mean time i woould like to study a book on climbing, can anyone reccomend one?? i see on tree source there is The Tree Climber's Companion £11 or Tree Climber's Guide 3rd Ed £30 to name a few, which would benefit me most??

1. Yes and no. Stihl only make roller nose bars up to 36", but if you really wanted one, Cannon would do one. I dont think the roller really makes much difference at that size.

2. Plenty of oil on a long bar. Watch out for blueing and overheating, but with enough oiling you wont have any problems.

3. All modern saws run 50:1 as long as you use the proper oil.

We use at the minute, what u would probably call mickey mouse 2 stroke oil, what does everyone else use? and where is the best place to buy it from? do you use single shots or large containers?

 

also, how for round on the chain oil dial for the 48" bar, how far past the (e) marking??

Buy stihl 2 stroke oil, either the red stuff or the new blue variety.

I'v got both at the mo, makes pretty colors in my combi-can!

As long as there is oil coming off the nose at full revs, you've got enough, so experiment until it seems about right. Test by pointing the nose at your pickup and running at full revs, there should be a spray of oil visible on the bodywork afterwards.
