Hardwood information

Hello all, just signed up to this forum and already learning a lot!

 

I help managing an estate in the North of Scotland and like most up here, we were battered by the winds on the 9th of Jan. The result is that we now have approx. 20 large Oaks down and a number of Elms and Beech etc. We also have a programme of removal of Elm's with DED (which is almost them all and will be them all soon!) Years gone by all this would have gone for firewood. I am really looking for info on markets for milling, and how much we could expect.

 

The plan is to get all good cuts to roadside, they are mostly sizeable trees of around 4ft and up in diameter. I appreciate some will have shake etc...but ball park figures would be good, or any info at all to be honest!!!

Big J would know what prices are like locally. Down in SE England you'd probably be looking at anywhere between £2.50 to £6 per hoppus ft for roadside Oak, unless it's truly exceptional.

 

J is a member of ASHS (Association of Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers), it might be worth looking to see if there's a member near you. ASHS seem to represent the smaller, niche mills who may well have a market for some of the odder timber that would be less attractive to the really big mills.
