sound wood on the outside but not much for the hinge. this was a roadside tree and had to come down due to the results of the picus tests. if it was to be stood in the middle of a field or in a woodland it would still be standing and would be for years to come

I'd of felled it for sure in a high risk area, just saying still plenty of sound wood. What fungi was present?

 

Most of the hinge strength is in the outer wood.

nice pic. sorry havnt seen it before as ive just signed up. dismantled a smaller beech with fire damage myself but not to this extent. how far did the hollow go up the stem? looks to be an ideal bat habitat before the fire. nice job
