When you say you are paying a fortune in NI and tax, what exactly do you mean?

Are you using a payroll package to calculate payslips or are you doing it manually? Don't forget that small businesses can now claim the employers allowance of up to £2,000 a year to reduce employers NIC contributions.

Also when you say you are paying a fortune in tax do you mean on your profits or in respect of your part time employee? If you mean the latter, then really it is not costing you anything, you are paying it over to HMRC instead of your employee.

Don't forget to make your monthly RTI returns on time because the Revenue will soon start issuing penalties for late filing.

I employ my groundie on a zero hour contract. I pay him the same as I did when he was 'self employed', but he gets less now and the rest goes straight to the treasury. The only increase in cost is £7.50 a week to the accountants for doing the payroll, and £50 for the year end stuff. I already have the employers insurance, as if you're running the site, you are considered to be employing even if it's a sub contractor. I got fed up with him blatantly not paying his tax.

I had to start up on my own 3 years ago and have got by with help from mates who are tree surgeons and casual labour. I would love to be in a position to employ but work is too sporadic.
