its in the root buttresses of a mature fagus sylvatica, the hand is for size comparison.

Avoiding the question for a moment...is that brown powder like dusting on the buttress aside your hand... a rust or spores from a ganoderma? Are there any other fruit bodies hosted on this tree?

If an ID is gonna be possible, its always a good idea to expand as much as you can the situ and circumstances yeah.............good luck.

No other signs of fungus on the tree, which appears to be in good health.

Either spores from a Ganoderma or he’s spilt his drinking chocolate, Bundle my boy.

Bottom one looks like remains of ffb and top one is plastic explosive with a fuse wire leading to it.
