Hi Arbtalk folks,

First off just want to say wonderful site, very informative and easy to use and you all seem to be a friendly bunch so Hello.

My names Jim im 30yrs of age and from aylesbury, buckinghamshire. i am currently looking at a slight career change and i was wondering if you could look over my plans and tell me if you believe that im heading the right way or if there is anything else i could be doing to better my chances of finding employment.

I am planning on doing my cs30 - cs31 - cs38 - cs39 & cs41 along with chipper training.

i would like to work as a climber eventualy so looking at trainee position or groundie work to start off with. will the modules i have planned so far be sufficient or would you advise differently ? as i would like to book these asap so any feedback would be great.

I have a background in working with wood been a kitchen fitter and worked in my grandfathers saw mill for a few years when leaving school. i now work as a fencer, landscaper and have been bitten by the tree surgery bug and would like to concentrate my career in this direction. I am also mechanicly minded and have worked repairing cars, bikes etc in my spare time.

I was wondering if you believe that i would be appealing to an employer to take on once i have completed my modules or if anybody on here has a position that they believe would suit me i would love to hear from you.

Many thanks.

Jim.

Ive personally found that hard working positive attitude and a willing to listen and learn far out ways the tickets.

by this i mean i have tried out climbers with more tickets than i have had hot dinners who were absolutely terrible, who climbed like they had only seen trees in the movies!

against this i have employed general bods who were keen and more importantly had common sense who i would have been happy to trust them to have a go at lowering and all sorts as they as just had common sense, listened and worked.

God i sound OLD!

u willing to travel?

Good luck

Hi Jose,

Thanks for your reply. Yes I am willing to travel have a van and some tools etc already got a saw which i bought broken and have reconditioned so I am slowly accumulating bits.

I completely agree with you about having common sense being more important than tickets I am a handy guy and work hard and can turn my hand to anything. I do some rock climbing as a hobby so I assume I can transfer some of this to the climbing side for tree work ?

I just thought that if I get some tickets under my belt it may show willing on my part.

Thanks.

Jim.

Hi Jim,

That all sounds positive. I do agree that common and a general handy/usefulness can out weigh tickets. However having your chipper ticket and Cs30-31 will definitely improve your employment chances in my experience. If you fancy getting some hands on experience give us a call. We are in oxford and will need another chap soon and often need an extra pair of hands.
