Ustulina vs Ganoderma, bully boy tatics?

Should of shoe horned this on to the 'nasty little blighter' thread, but gave it one of it's very own any way.

Cause I'm just sad like that

 

So...........here's a few shots from today, of a section of Beech that was moved 10m away, after the trunk was felled 5 years ago.

Though I had a shot of the 1.5m high stump, but has got lost in the ether. Will try and get another one soon.

Last shot is a view of the Ust on the stump.

 

The Tree whilst standing, had a deteriorating canopy and an un-Id'd ( at the time ) Ganoderma, inside a basal cavity.

This coupled with high target, and decayed heart, was the reason for removal.

 

Although the Tree had a couple of lower order saprophites knocking around the cavity, there did not appear to be any Ustulina, pre-fell.

This doesn't mean it wasn't there though.

 

This severed section is clearly inundated with G. applanatum, but no evidence of Ustulina.

The Stump however is now host to Ust and a tiny desicated Gano bracket.

 

My theory is that the Ust has, or is kicking ten bells out of our poor original tenant, and is now strong arming the arena for sole devouring rites.

Seems to indicate that Ust is acting here as an agressive saprophite.

Dont they reckon that the two can be a force to be reckoned with....the ganos will alter the conditions of the substrate by working on the cell walls....this allows the ustilina to get its head around the rest of the whats left....

Thanks Graham, hadn't picked up on this one.

Only sporadically visit UKTC, nowhere near enough investigative work to ponder on, as opposed to text book opinion which tends to pervade extensively imo.

 

Maybe, should delve deeper & give it more chance.

Rather than gang warfare, it could be that the stump and cut section provide different habitat conditions, that suit one rather than other species - the cut section might be dryer and the stump damper.

 

It would tie in with what that Lonsdale character was talking about.

But here, (amongst many other examples I have on record and have seen) is Ustulina on a severed section of Trunk (Beech) with no Ganoderma in evidence.

Both sexual stages of Ustulina are present on this trunk.

 

The black coal/tar like spore bearing stage, and the white/grey younger stage
