Solids are better if you're cutting in dirty/tough conditions, e.g. mud, earth filled stumps, ice, etc. But they wear the chain quicker and take more power to rotate the chain.

What are the advantages of a solid nose bar? My 880 has got a 48 inch solid nose bar and thinking of replacing it with a roller nose' date=' if I can find one.[/quote']

The hard nose seems to have less effect on power with a higher torque/lower revs saw. The 880 would be the least adversely affected of the modern range. The Stihl Duromatic 47" bar is OK. It's particularly good for boring if you are felling big stuff but you could replace it with a Sugihara 46" sprocket nosed bar and get faster general cutting.
