Get an old machine and strip and rebuild it - learn what each part is for and understand what function it has and why - you learn a damn sight more by doing rather than reading about it.

 

For the record - I have had no formal training, I learnt by having non running saws and needed to get them running - that was an efffective incentive plan:thumbup:

I'd follow spuds suggestion, and read the what's on your bench thread, it's what I did, I've now rebuilt a couple of saws, including an 090 from the crankcase up, salvaged a 357xp, repaired and modified an 051, plus many others
