Optimum diameter to coppice

I'm establishing coppice for hazel by planting and as you say its not that easy to find out.

I'm letting them grow for a year then cutting back to establish breaking from the base.

 

ive done this 18 years ago just weed it twice a year for two yrs it will break naturally good root establishment is most important cut third year grass is most problematic when establishing in pure coppice you should get a cut after 5 years

All hard woods coppice if cut at the right time of year.

I have laid hawthorne well over 10-12 dbh, this has coppiced well and any other species that were in the hedgerow.

I have pollard an old birch this has recovered well.

If the tree is healthy then I think it will coppice up.

I have even cut very mature oaks in the woods using 24 inch bar and these have recovered.
