t/R radius

Hi all,

 

I was discussing the t/R radius with someone and it appears they apply it in an amalgamated way (e.g. if all of the radius’s around the tree do not add up to the 30 / 70 rule the tree is OK). I always believed the research was based on singular 30/70 readings. Can anyone comment on this? (I also accept that tree failure is not this straight forward!)

As I understand it if all of the residual wall is greater than 30% thats fine. If one of the readings is below 30% then you need to asses the tree in it`s setting in more detail. The idea being that a tree will fail at it`s weakest point, so if you have 3 t/R readings of 75% and one of 10% you would consider your management options as the likely point of failure is at the 10% area. In very general terms.
