all less dense woods like poplar burn quickly. And oak burns very slowly. Everything else is somewhere in between. If you have an open fire then spitting becomes a problem with some woods. With stoves, you just have to make them up more often. All woods burn equally well when dry. Some are more calorie dense but weight for weight they have the same amount of energy. I've just come back from Norway where Birch seems to be the main prized firewood. Here many don't like it because it burns hot and quickly.

I've actually ordered a few poplar now. Worth a go I think. I like the sound of the growth rate and also the ease of taking cuttings. I know it will burn quickly but some say a harvest with decent(unsplit) logs should be achievable in 4 years! Plus it'll keep me fit going to the burner to add logs!!
