Sit on project - electrics and governor

Bought my first non running sit on. Never done a thing a with them - all new.

Managed to get it fired up with battery direct to starter after carb removal and clean and general degreasing of the engine. The electrics have been messed with - hence the sale - so I'm starting from scratch.

Ive checked the solenoid and its working, as are the 3 safety switches - also has an ammeter, light switch and ignitionswitch.

a. what's that little silver box (black and red cables attached) bolted to the underside of the dashboard area in the pic?

b. on the ignition switch at the 7-8 0'clock position the terminals dont have any designation like the others - any idea what it is

c. governor - the throttle rod has a spring running around it and the carb end of that spring is missing - it would nt just connect to the throttle butterfly like the rod would it ? - that wouldn't do anything - it's a Briggs 11hp

d. Have read that one of the wires coming from the alternator??stator?? under the flywheel should have a diode on it? nothing but 2 wires hanging - should i be testing for voltage from these when engine running - ac dc?

THink you will find that is a fusible link. Acts like a fuse, but resets when it cools. Prone to corrosion, replace it with an in line fuse

b. on the ignition switch at the 7-8 0'clock position the terminals dont have any designation like the others - any idea what it is

S=solenoid

L=lights (the one at 7-8 oclock)

B=battery

M=magneto(alternator)

G=ground (earth)

c. governor - the throttle rod has a spring running around it and the carb end of that spring is missing - it would nt just connect to the throttle butterfly like the rod would it ? - that wouldn't do anything - it's a Briggs 11hpit attaches to both ends of the rod, it just damps the movement, works fine without it

d. Have read that one of the wires coming from the alternator??stator?? under the flywheel should have a diode on it? nothing but 2 wires hanging - should i be testing for voltage from these when engine running - ac dc?

depends on the engine type (read it on the cowl) but probably 1amp DC on red wire. The black wire is probably the coil earth to stop the engine

hope that helps Mike, but its an MTD, so I would scrap it:biggrin:

STILL SEEM TO HAVE 1 EXTRA TAB - 6 NOT 5??

I must learn to count Mike!

Firstly, scrub the fact that I put alternator in brackets after magneto. It has nothing to do with the alternator. The magneto refered to is the ignition module (coil) which is earthed out through the switch via the 'm' terminal to kill the engine.

Secondly, I cannot remember the purpose of the 6th terminal. Test it with a multimeter to find at what key position it either opens or closes a circuit.

Thirdly, this appears to be the same switch, but is fitted to a different MTD machine. On this machine the terminal in question is marked as 'vacant'. Sorry about the poor picture.
