i have been asked to dig some holes around a 140 year old sycamore kids bucket deep and round fill with peat and put N Max on top and put turf back on.

what is N MAX i assume its a nitrogen magnesium fertiliser am i correct and what will it do for the tree. its on a roundabout. i am thinking that it is having a job as so old to get enough nutiants to keep it healthy if its roots are trying to go under road.

i await your views on this. i am doing the job for the cliant as he has asked for this to be done by a arboculturist who was called in to survey tree

Are there specific points around the tree you have to dig these pits or is it up to you? I'd have thought localised concentrations like this would be detrimental. Were there other instructions like watering or decompaction or mulching?

waiting to see report but was asked to dig every 6 ft around tree and put this fertilizer on top of peat. then give it a good soaking have a 8oo ltr tank but my thoughts are that it wants steady watering to be able to take up the fertilizer and water. soaking it would be like giving it a very good drink and if it stays dry it then is struggling again for moisture.

interested what this NMAX is.

I imagine the intensity of watering is to disperse and dilute the fertilizer rather than to water the tree.

That kind of dosing without overall aeration does seem to invite burn. Standard says fert or amendment SHALL be incorporated Uniformly, not 6' apart.
