Woodland Plan

Recommended Posts

I've recently bought a house and included in the purchase is just over an acre of woodland.

Having walked around the trees I notice that many of them, particularly those at the edge of the wood closest to the house are in poor condition with holes in the bases, many lean towards the light and are very tall (over 100 feet). Having never owned a wood before is there any advice anyone can give on its management, rules, regulations, grants? etc. Oh and the wood is small part of a much larger SSSI broad leaf woodland.

One added complication, an overhead power cable to mine and the neighbours house skirts round and under the canopy of the trees at the edge of the wood, so felling the leaning trees will be problematic!

The owner of the larger part of this woodland works it as part of his charcoal and firewood business, so will he have a Woodland management Plan in place and if so, can I see a copy on-line? If so, where? Reason I ask is that I could then make sure my plan compliments his!

Why not just ask him if he has one and if you can see it? If he manages the rest of the wood he might be interested in taking on the management of your part as well.

I think, but others here will know better, that the powerline boys should be doing inspections on the trees along their boundary every few years anyway and doing any remedial work following that. So the trees along the side of the line should be dealt with in due course by them.

I have a meeting with them on Monday so we'll see what they have to say then.
