Hi, I came across 3 nests of this stuff the other day does any body know the correct way for disposing of them, I know they have to be incinerated but the company I work for seem to think they can incinerate it at the yard we are based from.

Is it not classed as a bio hazard so there fore has to be incinerated at a licensed incinerator

Look forward to replies

the Environment Agency Technical Guidance publication WM2, states that "OPM material containing urticating hairs would be classed as “H4 Irritant: non corrosive substances and preparations which, through immediate, prolonged or repeated contact with the skin or mucous membrane, can cause inflammation.”

As its a hazardous waste, it would be sensible to contact a contracting firm that specifically deals with the correct disposal of OPM

There are a number of these in and around London.

As Warren has said it would also be a good move to inform the FC......

The nests are pretty much at the pupae stage now and although the caterpillars are in the process turning into non toxic moth the nests will be full of the shed hairs. It's important to treat the nests and scourge the residue of the nests on the tree.

Full ppe specifically adapted for this task is required to protect the climber.

As such it's definitely worth getting in someone with the correct experience

here's G&Ts details, who are probably the nearest contractor to you who deal with disposing of nests.
