How many links do I want?

I dont think a 660 can run a bar that big, 36" is pushing it but ok with semis chisel on soft stuff.

 

For general stuff even a 30" inch bar is big enough for a 660.

 

 

 

Milling with that size bar you need an 880.

Had a chat to a few folk who have been milling with them and they all seem to think it will be fine, so long as I keep it real, oil it, take my time and don't over heat it? Bost of the stuff I'm milling won't need a bar that big, it's just where there are branch stumps to get around that I will need the extra length!

Hi guys I am looking to put a 46" sugihara bar on to a ms 660. 3/8 sprocket. Does any one know how many links I will need or know how to work it out? I shall be wrapping my new bar with oregan ripping chain if that makes a difference. Thank Sam

 

I'd say that 46" on a non-ported MS 660 is pushing it. I am occasionally milling large softwood (Spruce/Fir) with a 42" bar on the MS 660, and it is struggling.

 

I guess a semi-full skip chain would help reduce the power requirements quite a bit, but skip chains are hard to come by this side of the Atlantic.

Likewise would the Granberg Ripping chain, as it's sort of partial full-skip and therefore requires 20-25% less power all else being equal, see Granberg Ripping Chain

 

In any case, contact Rob at Contact and he'll sort you out.

 

EDIT: Is the nose-wheel .404" or 3/8"? That makes quite a bit of difference to the drive link count. As far as I can tell, the standard 46" bar is .404", see http://www.chainsawbars.co.uk/products/sugihara-46-404-063-132-drive-links/

Agree entirely with the above comments on use of Granberg chain and the need to check the nose sprocket on the bar. It may be possible to change the nose sprocket to 3/8" so long as one the right shape for the bar is available. Alternatively you could fit a .404" drive sprocket to the saw.

 

The bigger problem is likely to be the bar mounts, which are different on the 880 to the 660. Most very long bars are only available with the bigger bar mounts.

 

The saw will pull it, but it will be very slow and you will need to hold it back to stop it bogging down. It would also be a good idea to raise the grinder right up on the teeth to minimise the hook, and resist the temptation to force the pace as this risks serious damage to the power head.

 

You will probably also need an aux oiler as the saw will be well over design capacity.
