Veteran Trees Initiative: Specialist Survey Method

Hi all,

it's a while ago since I posted here first, but I remember getting in touch with Treeworks and they quoted £750 for a day's training, no matter if it's one taker or five. I think they said there may be a maximum number they'd want to take on, but at that time I wasn't worried about that.

Tony, is it okay for you to speak to Neville and let us all know?

already all over it:thumbup1:

he is a very busy boy but shall have something worth saying regarding the now long list of folks eager to do this one inside a week:thumbup1:

Good point actually - I have had a skim through the SSM handbook and it doesn't look like rocket science. I probably can't justify the cost of 'training' for this.

Some times its not just about justification, whoever needs justification for a little learning has missed something along the road!

I guess for many it wont seem worthwhile, it is as the title suggests a "specialist" survey method, and maybe thats the whole point, specialists skills?

I believe the whole point is that several "specialists" may use the same format and apply thier specialism to the table of data

A lichenologist, mycologist, entomologist etc etc etc

I think fair enough if people want to pay for the course, then thats fine. I think infact it would benefit a group of ecologists or interested parties that want field experience of surveying veteran tree habitats. IMO I'd just attend a ATF meeting, where you get these sorts of skills, and the banter for free. BUT I'm just saying all this because I have experience of using this survey methodology.

I know the SSM guidelines are thought through and not rocket science, but I can certainly do with a boost of confidence when it comes to knowing a veteran tree when I see one (from my limited experience I know it's not necessarily a case of "yes" or "no" but a great deal of "maybe"), and even if they tell me I've done everything the way it should be done, I would see this as a day well spent. And if it's a good number of us interested, it will hopefully not be too expensive to call it off.
