not well rooted

I have a flowering crab apple that my late mother planted about 4/5 years ago and today I removed the stake and found the root plate moving when i move the stem. Its about 3" diameter and 10 foot tall, and has a good canopy and loads of blossom on it. what should i do? dig it out and re plant & re stake it?

I would - sounds like it may have been planted too deep (trop profond?) ha cant remember le spelling. - get some big stakes and straps on it - 4 would be ideal but allow just un petit peu de movement - crown thin/reduce too. apples are good transplanters

What would be the best time of year for such an operation, I would like to get it done before the autumn/winter gales.
