If your relatively new to climbing would it be best not to start on a friction hitch to build your strength and gain more experience rather then this setup you use now? Like Worcswuss Said you almost have a srt setup there? Don't take what im saying the wrong way just trying to help.

I saw a guy using this for tree work on YouTube and it seemed to fill my needs, I can get up an down a rope quick and easy, the ascender pops off if not needed then I can use the ID in belay mode just like the hitch climber.

Also just using my arms is building my strength and leaves my legs for moving about.

I'm down in Hertfordshire, lovely tree country!

What you nearly have there is a rads system.

What gave you got at the top?

If you just tied the line off at the top so its a fixed single line then you'd gave an SRT system using rads which is a 3:1 not 4:1 which shoukd be plenty.

I'd is ok for a rads system. Same as a gri gri but with panic safety feature.

If you don't enough upper body strength them your in the wrong business!!

Not sure if they still sell it but Petzl used to sell a RADS system using a GriGri, a pulley and a hand ascender exactly like DrSteeves setup just swap the ID for the GriGri.

I see nothing wrong with it if it works for you Doc.

Our natural inclination, mine as well as anyone else, is to stuff everyone into the same box we are most comfortable in, the HitchClimber and a good VT or like hitch is a great system, no doubt. But it is not the be all, end all of tree climbing.

There are many ways to work a tree.

Some better than others, some good for some but not for other, etc etc...

The sheer variety has always been one of the attractions of the job for me.

I think its commendable that you persevered and found a system that works for your needs in the trees.

Stay safe bud.

That backup sling from your hand ascender to ya belt ring, your thinking if the Petzl ID fails you have backup. that looks like knots tied in the sling to me, your ID fails when you pulled right up to the pulley with max slack on the sling, your going straight down, snap bang on ya arse. change the sling for rope.
