G. australe/adspersum has a heart rot strategy, where its spores gain access to the interior of the tree via wounds in the bark/trunk (schwarze, Engels & mattheck)

 

It's thought to have the ability to invade sound wood as opposed to the artist bracket (G. applanatum) which persists in dysfunctional wood.

I think Dave has given you some excellent references to follow up on, I would agree with Guy that you should never discount or ignore the importance of the host (the tree) in the relationship between any wood decay fungi and its host.

 

If you can get hold of it read chapter two in 'Biodiversity in Dead Wood' J Stokland, J Siitonen, B Jonsson.
