Saw chain for abrasive Oak

Recommended Posts

Rob D, if you mean Dropbox it works with Cut & Paste, Copy & Paste or Drop n Drag; you just take the title of your document form your document list and move it to Dropbox.

Cheers for that - I will have another go

Try changing your cutting technique a little.

When cutting down trees in sandy environments, I always apply a slightly different cutting technique, taught to me at the arb college by an old guy who grew up in a part of the country where the earth was very sandy and windy.

Cut with a pulling chain, only, and position the bar in such a way, that the cutting is done outwards in a fairly steep angle (close to 90 degrees) to the bark. This will prevent the chain from dragging sand grains all the way though the trunk dulling the cutters. If you cut from the centre of the trunk and outwards, the sand grains deposited in the bark will be pulled off the trunk, and while they may touch the cutters they will not stay in contact for very long.

So the gob cut needs to be made with a bit of finesse, and the felling cut needs to be done with a plunge-cut that does NOT go all the way through the trunk, but is pulled tangentially all the way around the trunk. Don't know how to explain it. Let me know if you need a sketch, and I'll post one.

I have only ever used this technique on Larch and Fir, which is typically the only trees that will grow in very barren and sandy areas in Denmark.

I would be really interested in hearing from you whether this technique makes a noticeable difference in your case.
