Sorry David, feeling lazy this morning and should have searched more myself. This forum makes it too easy not to be self-sufficient.

 

Just observed it on one limb which was either the extremity of a hazard beam or a hung up failed limb. Can't remember which as it was a rush job, started late due to a failing rootplate. Needles were brown and dying- not much help. Pretty sure the limb was dead, thinking about it.

 

I'll search your suggestions (and the log pile) for more info.
