Solo top handle - rattling sound when idling?

Guys anybody know what causes the 'tinny' 'rattly' sound when a saws ticking over?

I've had it occur on my work saws (mainly 346xp's) but now its happening with my own top handle and can't figure out what it is...saw is working great apart from this?

Dissapears when revved (or I just dont hear it) but is quite apparent when idling.

PS-why aren't there more of these SOLO top handles about? I bought this one s/h on here as my first 'own' top handle...and I much prefer it to the 200's I use at work. It is much much more reliable, munches through the bigger stuff with less effort, goes and goes all day long and I haven't broken a single component on it yet (forever replacing chainbrake handles on 200's). Only downside is there seem to be no suppliers of parts locally (NI). Apart from this its a light, well balanced and ultra reliable little saw.

Anyway, any advice appreciated regards technical issue.

it is most likely to be the the sound of clutch shoes contacting the drum. teat by applying the chain brake. It should stop tinkling.

This can be due to a weak return spring, or too fast a tick over, or both.

Barries your man - think we must have been twins in a previous life:thumbup::lol:

If the saw is making a ring ting tinging sound - a bit like a small tinging bell then it will be as GK says - the clutch shoes just catching the sprocket drum.

The fix - either lower your idle a tad and if this is not possible, fit new clutch springs.

A simple test - apply your chainbrake and see if it goes.

346XPs tend to have rattly clutches, the shoes actually move on the worn central spider carrier part - a new clutch will sort this but it does give a heavier sounding rattle - new springs may also help.

Other than this - you may have a bar side crank bearing rattling or small end play/rattle but far less likely!

Good luck!
